ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR –Extension and Research Plant Pathology (Requisition number 0803204)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a 12-month tenure-accruing Assistant/Associate Professor position that will be 35% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 65% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) available in the Department of Plant Pathology, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida.  This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Plant Pathology.  This faculty member will be responsible for establishing a long term, integrated, extension and research program focused on diseases of agronomic and vegetable crops in Florida.  The position’s extension responsibilities for agronomic crops include peanuts, pasture and forage crops, corn, sorghum, small grains, tobacco, and soybeans.  Vegetable crop responsibilities include involvement in state-wide extension efforts for various crops including cucurbits, cabbage, and potato.  The research program will focus on agronomic and vegetable crops of importance to clientele and serve as the basis for extramural funding.  The successful candidate is expected to build a strong collaborative relationship with extension and research faculty at the UF research centers and county offices throughout the state. Long-term, the research program should create and evaluate innovative disease control programs for the assigned crops.  The faculty member will be expected to participate in graduate education through chairing graduate committees and supervising thesis and dissertation research.  All IFAS faculty are expected to demonstrate commitment and responsibility to the three functions of the Land-Grant mission.  Implementation of the Affirmative Action Program of the University of Florida is required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Plant Pathology or a closely related field is required.  Postdoctoral or other postgraduate experience is desirable but not required.  Given the predominant problems on the assigned crops, mycological expertise is desirable. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships, and to procure extramural funding.  Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.  Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAScore values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department of Plant Pathology has diverse teaching, research and extension education programs with 13 faculty members located on the University of Florida’s Gainesville campus, 19 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, as well as numerous courtesy faculty and support personnel.  Currently the department has roughly 35 undergraduate and graduate students, and houses the Doctor of Plant Medicine Program.  The department also participates in the Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology program.  The University of Florida, a member of the Association of American Universities and the State’s ‘flagship’ University, is a Land-Grant institution with an enrollment in excess of 48,000 students on the Gainesville campus.  The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), the largest unit within the University, has approximately 950 faculty and 1,600 staff members located in 15 academic units and the School of Forest Resources and Conservation, 9 interdisciplinary centers, and 13 dispersed research and educational centers.  Additionally, UF/IFAS staffs Cooperative Extension units (County Campuses) in each of Florida’s 67 counties and the Seminole Tribe.  UF/IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resource research and education organizations, is administered by a Senior Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Gainesville is an attractive university town of 120,000 located near the geographic center of Florida and midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The region is characterized by extensive natural resources, with many lakes, rivers, and natural areas. The Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (PMCB)  Graduate Program at the University of Florida is an intercollegiate and interdepartmental graduate degree program that emphasizes understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms that mediate plant development, adaptation, and evolution.  The PMCB Program is one of the most flexible and comprehensive graduate programs in the U.S. Its success is a result of its interdisciplinary emphasis. PMCB has over 35 faculty conducting fundamental and applied research, including bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, genetics, biochemistry, physiology and molecular and cellular biology.

Scholarship Opportunity: Qualified students are supported by a variety of research
assistantships and fellowships, and students are not required to be teaching

Assistantships include a competitive stipend, medical insurance and a full tuition
waiver.
Qualifications: Successful candidates should have a strong interest in plant molecular
and cellular mechanisms controlling development, metabolism, adaptation,
and evolution. Applicants typically have a B.S. or M.S. in the agricultural, forestry,
biological or chemical sciences with advanced undergraduate coursework in genetics,
molecular and cellular biology, and biochemistry.
