The International Society for Plant Pathology Congratulates the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on its 150th Anniversary on May 15 2012.

Established less than 20 years after Potato Late Blight devastated crops in Europe and North America, the USDA has played a seminal role in leading the fight against plant diseases.

On May 15, 1862, President Lincoln established the (US) Department of Agriculture. The purpose of the department was to acquire and diffuse among the people of the United States useful information on subjects connected with agriculture in the most general and comprehensive sense of that word, and to procure, propagate, and distribute among the people new and valuable seeds and plants.
