On behalf of the International Committee of Plant Virus Epidemiology (ICPVE), a subcommittee of the International Society of Plant Pathology (ISPP), and the Local Organizing Committee, with the support of the Brazilian Phytopathological Society (SBF), we have the pleasure to announce that

The 16th International Symposium of Plant Virus Epidemiology (ISPVE) will be held in São Paulo, Brazil, from June 30th to July 3rd, 2025.

We invite scientists, professionals and students interested in plant virus epidemiology to attend the symposium, which will have the following theme: “Epidemiology and management of plant viruses and their vectors: a challenge for agriculture in the 21st century”, focusing on ecology, epidemiology, and pathogen-host-vector interactions.

The four-day event will bring together specialists in the epidemiology of plant virus and other vector-transmitted plant pathogens and will provide an excellent opportunity to present and discuss scientific advances in this area. It will also be a chance to promote debate and reflection on the global social and economic consequences of plant virus epidemics and the challenges for the 21st century in solving problems intelligently, efficiently, and sustainably. The symposium will include oral and poster presentations. The activities will begin each day with the presentation of a topic by a prominent researcher in the area, followed by oral presentations, previously selected from all the abstracts submitted for that topic. On each day, there will be time allocated for personal discussions to encourage collaboration between the symposium participants. In addition, on the last day of the event, participants will have the opportunity to visit research institutions and cultivation areas to learn about research and agriculture in Brazil.

The main topics addressed will include the results of recent research involving etiology, diagnostic methods, ecology, diversity and evolution of plant viruses and their vectors, virus-host-vector interactions, in addition to general aspects of epidemiology, epidemic disease surveillance models, and strategies for the management and control of virus-borne diseases. Research involving other phytopathogens transmitted by vectors, such as Xylella fastidiosa, Candidatus Liberibacter spp., Ca. Phytoplasma spp. and Spiroplasma spp., which have caused major epidemics in recent years, will also be addressed. In addition, discussions and reflections on epidemics will involve a careful look at climate change, sustainability, food security, and the quality of human life. We will be waiting for you in São Paulo, Brazil. So, save the date!

The Organizing Committee thanks you for forwarding this first communication to your colleagues and societies. We look forward to welcoming you to São Paulo.
