Call for Nominations - ISPP Executive
Committee (2003-2008)
Richard I Hamilton, Past-President of ISPP is repeating
his June 2001 Call for Nominations for the Executive Committee of ISPP that
will serve for the period 2003-2008. Four positions require nominees:
President, Vice-President, Secretary-General, and Treasurer.
Any member of an ISPP-Associated Society can suggest
nominees. Names of nominees should be sent to the members of the Nomination
Committee (see below) directly or by a Councilor of an Associated Society.
It is essential that each nominee provide evidence of his or her
willingness to serve.
Nominations must be in the hands of the Nomination
Committee by 31 December 2001. The Nomination Committee will consider the
nominees for each office, and being cognizant for the need of geographical
diversity, will select two names for each office and send those names for
ratification by the current ISPP Executive Committee.
The Nomination Committee will complete its work by 31 May
2002. The list of nominees will be in the hands of the Secretary-General by
12 June 2002 and a ballot containing the names of two nominees for each
office will be prepared for transmittal to ISPP members.
To facilitate the work of the Nomination Committee,
please send names of all nominees to members of the entire membership of the
Committee whose names and e-mail addresses are given below:

Call for Societies to Bid on Hosting
the 2008 ISPP Congress
This is a reminder from the ISPP Secretary-General
about the call for bids to host the 9th International Congress of Plant
Pathology in 2008. The original call was sent to ISPP Councilors on 6 June
2001. Any member of ISPP (through their Councilor) may submit a bid. The
deadline for receiving bids is 1 March 1 2002.
The criteria for selecting an ISPP Congress site are:
1. Invitations (bids) must come from a national society
or combination of societies and not from a city or national convention
bureau. On the other hand, the society or societies making a bid should
consider working with a local convention bureau to help identify and
advertise the unique features of their country that will interest the
delegates.
2. The financial obligations of hosting an International
Congress of Plant Pathology are the responsibility of the host national
society (or societies). ISPP does not underwrite the financing of the
Congress.
3. The national society (or societies) hosting the
Congress is responsible for organizing the program, and therefore must be
sufficiently large to provide leadership in the major sections of the
discipline of plant pathology. The program of a past congress may be
consulted as a guide. Some help can be expected from ISPP Subject Matter
Committees.
4. The site (city and hotels/campus) should normally be
able to accommodate more than 2000 delegates and provide meeting rooms for
around 10 concurrent sessions, as well as numerous small meeting rooms. The
site should preferably offer a variety of amenities and offer facilities
with a range of costs. Ideally, a university campus should be near to
provide low-cost accommodations for those unable to afford more expensive
hotels and meals.
5. The host city must be easily accessible by
international airlines and offer a variety of cultural and tourist
attractions. One day of the Congress may be scheduled for tours of local
attractions.
National Societies wishing to make a bid to host the 9th
International Congress of Plant Pathology are welcomed to contact President
Peter Scott at <p.scott@cabi.org>
and/or Secretary-General Charles Delp at <charliedelp@hotmail.com>
for further details (also see ISPP web site at <http://www.isppweb.org>).
By March 2002, the bid must be sent to all ISPP Councilors who will be asked
to vote on competing bids. This can be facilitated by use of ISPP List, an
e-mail link to most Councilors, and the use of a web site that can be
created by the bidding society.
News from Ed French about Latin
American Congresses
1) The XII Latin American Phytopathological Congress (XII
Congreso Latinoamericano de Fitopatología) organized by the Latin American
Phytopathological Association (Asociación Latinoamericana de Fitopatología
- ALF) will be held from 1-6 April 2003 in the Radisson Resort South Padre
Island, Rio Grande Valley, Texas, USA. It will be organized by the recently
elected President of ALF, Dr José M. Amador (Director of the Texas
Agricultural Experiment Station and Citrus Center at Weslaco, TX). This
event will be held jointly with both the annual meetings of the Caribbean
and Southern Divisions of the American Phytopathological Society. (APS). Dr
Amador will also be at that time President of the APS Caribbean Division.
For further information, contact <j-amador@tamu.edu>
or <e.french@cgiar.org>.
2) XIII Latin American Phytopathological Congress (XIII
Congreso Latinoamericano de Fitopatología) organized by the Latin American
Phytopathological Association (ALF) jointly with the annual meeting of the
Argentine Phytopathological Association (AAF) will take place around mid
2005 in Cordoba, Argentina. The organizer will be Dr Sergio L Lenardon of
the Institute for Phytopathology and Plant Physiology (IFFIVE), INTA,
Cordoba, Argentina. For further details contact <slenard@infovia.com.ar>

World Food Summit: five years later
A global forum comprising Heads of States and Governments
from around the world or their representatives will take place in Italy from
5 to 9 November 2001 in association with the biennial Conference of the Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The forum will
review progress in implementing the World Food Summit Plan of Action
formulated at the World Food Summit in November 1996.
The 1996 Summit pledged political will and common and
national commitments "to achieving food security for all and to an
on-going effort to eradicate hunger in all countries, with an immediate view
to reducing the number of undernourished people to half their present level
no later than 2015".
The information analysed by FAO so far indicates that the
estimated average annual reduction by eight million in the number of
undernourished people in the world, which was achieved during much of the
periods 1990/92 and 1996/98, is far below the average rate of 20 million per
year necessary to reach the 2015 target.
Unless early corrective action is taken, the broad-based
assessment planned for 2006 might have to conclude that the Summit’s
target will not be met.
World leaders will be requested to outline at the
November 2001 forum the measures they envisage to achieve the goals set in
adopting the documents of the World Food Summit, and to take the decisions
necessary to accelerate the rate of implementation of measures aimed at
halving the number of the world’s hungry.
Representatives from other organisations including
scientific societies will have an opportunity to express views, experiences
and engage in discussion with governments and other stakeholders.
News from the American
Phytopathological Society (APS)
1) Mycotoxins
Highlights from the symposium "Mycotoxins: the cost
of achieving food security and food quality" presented at the APS
Conference in Salt Lake City in August 2001 and sponsored by the APS
Mycotoxicology Committee, were put at <http://www.apsnet.org>.
They explored mycotoxins and their national and international costs.
2) International Programs – (APS)
The latest newsletter of the Office of International
Programs of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) is available
on APSnet and may be found at <http://www.apsnet.org/members/oip/top.asp>
and then by scrolling to "Recent News and Activities" in order to
select the August 2001 issue.
3) Risk Assessment of Transgenic Crops
An APSnet feature entitled Can Risk Analysis ‘Colorize’
the Black and White of Transgenic Crops? considers risk assessment of
transgenic crops, and suggests that better risk analysis could improve
rational discussion regarding biotechnology. See <http://www.apsnet.org/online/feature/riskanalysis/top.html>.
4) Revised Common Names of Plant Diseases
Official designations by the American Phytopathological
Society (APS) of common names of diseases of soybean, almond, pistachio,
walnut, pecan, and cotton are at <http://www.scisoc.org/resource/common/commentc.htm>.
Challenges by APS members should be made to the Chair of
the Committee for the Standardization of Common Names for Plant Diseases,
Paul Bertrand, University of Georgia, P O Box 1209, Tifton, GA 31793-1209,
USA; Fax: +1-912-386-7415; e-mail: <bertrand@arches.uga.edu>.
