Invitation to ICPP2013 in
Beijing
Professor Han Chenggui, Secretary-General of the
Chinese Society for Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture and
Biotechnology, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100094, China sent
the following invitational letter from the President of the Chinese
Society for Plant Pathology. < hanchenggui@cau.edu.cn. Click
here for original letter of invitation
Dear Colleague,
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 10th
International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP) in Beijing, China, in
August 2013. The theme of the Congress is "Bio-security, Food Safety
and Plant Pathology: The Role of Plant Pathology in a Globalized
Economy". We will also incorporate the Annual Meeting of the Chinese
Society for Plant Pathology.
Beijing, as the capital of China, and a city of
international reputation, has more than 200 first-class hotels and
international convention centers. Nowadays, many international scientific
and cultural exhibitions and meetings are held in Beijing. Room rates for
these hotels will range from US$50-200.
CSPP will recruit many sponsors for financial
support to lower the registration fees as much as possible. The registration fee will include attendance at all Scientific
Meetings, abstracts of Congress papers (proceeding and CD-ROM), five
lunches, coffee breaks, exhibition access, souvenir and the welcome
reception. Student registration covers all but the proceeding of Congress
papers. A Bursary Fund will also be available to assist attendance of
students and delegates from developing countries.
Participants can also enjoy the world famous
attractions in and around Beijing, such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City,
the Summer Palace etc. Delegates will find very enthusiastic hosts and
peace-loving friendly people in China. Now Beijing has attracted
increasing international attention recently because it will host the
Olympic Games in 2008.
We will guarantee a historically significant and
successful Congress with an unforgettable experience for the world
community of plant pathologists.
We look forward to welcoming you to Beijing in
2013.
Sincerely, Youliang PENG, President, Chinese
Society for Plant Pathology.

British Society for Plant
Pathology
In addition to the BSPP Presidential Meeting
"Cereal Pathosystems", which will take place at Queen Mary
College, University of London, UK, on 16-17 December 2008, there are two
one-day workshops. Details are available at < http://www.bsppmeetings.org.uk
>.
The first workshop at PGRO, Peterborough, UK, on
24 June 2008 is about break crops, providing an overview of current and
future threats from diseases to the production of oilseed rape, field peas
and faba beans.
The second workshop at SASA, Edinburgh, UK, on 2
July 2008 will focus on potatoes to give an overview of current disease
constraints on potato production and to provide post-graduates and recent
post-docs with an opportunity to present either brief oral or poster
presentations.
Both workshops are FREE to BSPP members, with
compulsory registration online. Although registration will not open for
the BSPP Presidential Meeting 2008 until 1 July, details on this meeting

Nematology in Australia and New
Zealand
A special issue of "Australasian Plant
Pathology" (Volume 37, issue 3, 2008) has been brought out to
coincide with the Fifth International Congress of Nematology in Brisbane,
Australia, in July 2008 (see "Coming Events").
This will be the first time that the Congress has
been held in the southern hemisphere so nematologists from Australia and
New Zealand have taken the opportunity to highlight the work being done in
the two countries. There are 10 papers in the special issue, which has
been edited by G R Stirling, K Harrower and L E Webb. The papers cover the
history of the discipline in the region, but also discuss strongly current
research priorities and openings for the future.
It is published for the Australasian Plant
Pathology Society by CSIRO PUBLISHING < www.publish.csiro.au/journals/app
>.

Ken Pegg
Ken Pegg retired in 2001 from his position as
Senior Principal Scientist in the Department for Primary Industries in
Queensland, Australia. He remains extremely active on the biology of
diseases of woody horticultural plants, and in furthering novel control
procedures against diseases in avocadoes and passion fruit, perhaps most
famously against root-infecting Phytophthora spp..
Ken has recently received an important Australian
civil honour, and now has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree, DSc
(Honoris Causa), by the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Ken
travelled to South Africa to accept the award on 21 April 2008. Various
functions for Ken are being hosted by Professor Mike Wingfield < Mike.Wingfield@up.ac.za
> and to celebrate an anniversary of the Forestry and Agricultural
Research Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria.

Large Grant to Cornell
University against Wheat Stem Rust
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded
Cornell University $US26.8 million for a global partnership to combat stem
rust, a wheat disease threatening food security. The new pathotype UG99
was first detected in Uganda in 1999 and has recently been found in Yemen
and Iran. There is a high possibility of it spreading to Afghanistan,
India, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. More than 90 percent of the
world's wheat varieties may be susceptible to Ug99.
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement
Center (CIMMYT), International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and
International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Area (ICARDA)
and others will work for the Cornell-based Durable Rust Resistance in
Wheat project. The program will enlist the Ethiopian Institute for
Agricultural Research and the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute as key
research sites to develop UG99-resistant wheats. The FAO will also be
involved.

Gene Superfamily Responsible
for Devastating Plant Diseases
Research teams from the Virginia Bioinformatics
Institute, USA, and Wageningen University, Netherlands, have identified a
superfamily of pathogen genes involved in infection. More than 370
effector genes, mostly accounted for by the Avh (avirulence homolog) gene
superfamily, were identified from Phytophthora sojae and P. ramorum. The
proteins produced by these genes work so as to facilitate infection.
P. sojae causes a mean annual loss of $1-2 million
in soybean yield in the USA alone, and P. ramorum causes sudden oak death
syndrome which is devastating oak trees in California and Oregon, USA.
The Avh superfamily is one of the most rapidly
evolving parts of the genome of Phytophthora. It might be the key to the
pathogen's ready ability to overcome plant defence.
