INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER ON PLANT PATHOLOGY

ISPP Newsletter 28 (3) June 1998

In this issue:

Bids for the 8th International Congress of Plant Pathology in 2003

The bids for hosting the 8th ICPP in the year 2003 should have reached all ISPP Councillors in the past few months and the Councillors will be registering their ballots about their choice with the ISPP Secretary-General Anupam Varma.

Bids have been received from:

1) The Chinese Society for Plant Pathology in Beijing. The proposal is to hold the Congress in Beijing using the Beijing International Convention Center near to the China Agricultural University.

2) The Australasian Plant Pathology Society on behalf of its members in the South Island of New Zealand. The proposal is to hold the Congress in Christchurch, New Zealand, on the suggested dates of 2-8 February 2003.

The ISPP Newsletter to be on the Internet only

I have recommended to the ISPP Executive that the ISPP Newsletter should be published only on the ISPP web site from the end of 1998 and that mailing of the paper version should cease at that time. At present about 850 copies of each issue are mailed out to individual members of ISPP, Councillors, Secretaries of Associated Societies, Committee Chairs and representatives of Affiliated Societies and Supporting Organisations.

The intention is that all plant pathologists and other interested persons should access the ISPP Newsletter on the ISPP web site at (http://www.bspp.org.uk/ispp). I ask those who believe that they will be inconvenienced by this change and would prefer to continue to receive the ISPP Newsletter in paper form to let either me or an ISPP Executive member know as soon as possible while the recommendation is being considered. Brian Deverall, Editor, ISPP Newsletter

ISPP Extension Committee

The Extension Committee has gone through a quiescent phase since the last International Congress in Montreal. This was due partly to other unforeseen commitments by its new Chairman but also the lack of response from delegates present in Montreal and a call for representation from affiliated Societies. With the approach of ICPP98 in August this lack of activity, hopefully, is about to change.

At the Congress in Edinburgh there will be a business meeting during one of the evening sessions where extension plant pathologists will be able to air their views on the appropriate functions of the ISPP Extension Committee. I plan to open a discussion forum on the ISPP web-site. I hope that this will provide a number of benefits. The ability to get information rapidly to and from colleagues around the World and eventually to provide a repository of information valuable to extension workers. The message is to watch the ISPP web site (http://www.bspp.org.uk/ispp) for developments.

Nigel Hardwick

Chairman ISPP Extension Committee, Central Science Laboratory, Sand Hutton, York YO41 1LZ, UK; e-mail: nigel.hardwick@csl.gov.uk

Rhizoctonia

The ISPP Rhizoctonia Working Group intends to change its steering committee and will hold an election in the months preceding the 7th International Congress of Plant Pathology. The handover to the new Working Group Committee for the next 5 years will then be made in Edinburgh in August. Currently the committee is comprised of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Newsletter Editor and three ordinary members.

The Current chairman will remain on the committee as immediate past Chairman. Three of the previous committee (Suha Jabaji-Hare, Gerda Dijst and Stephen Neate) will remain on the committee to ensure continuity and the new chairman will be elected from these previous committee members. Three committee member positions will be replaced. Expressions of interest are sought from individuals who might like to undertake one of the three vacant positions.

The aims of the working group are:

  • to promote exchange of information on research relating to pathogenic and non-pathogenic Rhizoctonia species.
  • to promote international collaboration and encourage collaborative research projects among colleagues working on the various aspects of Rhizoctonia research.
  • to have an organised body that will deal with issues of interest for Rhizoctonia researchers and interact with related professional societies.
  • to hold periodic meetings and workshops that are focused on various aspects of Rhizoctonia research.
  • to distribute among people interested in Rhizoctonia, relevant information and news from different countries related to Rhizoctonia research and important events.

Ideally committee members should be from different geographic areas of the world. The original committee had members from Australia, United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan and Israel. Interested parties should by 12 June nominate themselves to Prof Baruch Sneh, e-mail: Snehba@post.tau.ac.il or fax: +972-3-640-9380.

Potato Late Blight

There are two initiatives in relation to late blight disease of potato.

As one, the American Phytopathological Society (APS) advertises its interactive and educational website <http://www.scisoc.org>, which covers the historical impacts of late blight, highlights key research articles, presents an online curriculum and provides links to other relevant information. The need to warn growers and consultants about the greatly increased risks posed by new strains of the pathogen are emphasised. Major issues for growers are reduced yields, increased losses due to blight during storage and transport and heightened fear of the new aggressive strains. Greatly increased fungicide costs in trying to keep the disease under control can cause economic hardship.

As the second, a conference is being organized from 16-19 March 1999 in Quito, Ecuador, (see Coming Events) by the International Potato Center (CIP) on behalf of the members of the Global Initiative on Late Blight (GILB). For further information on the conference, contact Mari Kearl, c/o International Potato Center (CIP), GILB, Apartado 1558, Lima 12, Peru; e-mail: m.kearl@cgnet.com

From Phytopathology News

The March 1998 issue of Phytopathology News from APS carried a notice of public health concerns about the registration and use in the USA of the bacterium Burkholderia (formerly Pseudomonas) cepacia as a microbial pesticide. The concerns arise from recent studies suggestive of a causal role of some strains identified as B. cepacia in serious human disease.

Problems arise from uncertainty in the taxonomic classification of numerous strains identified as B. cepacia. It is unclear whether the strains used as biocontrol agents co-identify to the strains associated with human disease, or even whether all the strains comprise the same species. Until these problems are resolved, new registrations or additional uses of currently registered biocontrol strains by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) will be difficult. Further research is needed on genetic and phenotypic markers, other taxonomic characters and pathogenicity tests in order to distinguish strains of B. cepacia used as microbial pesticides and any that are pathogenic to humans.

Concerned individuals in the USA or those with helpful information were recommended to contact Denise Greenway of EPA Office of Pesticide Programs (7511W), 401 M Street, Washington, DC 20460, USA, or by e-mail: greenway.denise@epamail.epa.gov

A symposium addressing biological and medical issues about B. cepacia is scheduled for a joint APS/EPA meeting in 1998, and more information about this symposium can be obtained from Jennifer Parker on e-mail: jlp@plantpath.wisc.edu

Past-President of ISPP

Dr R James Cook ceased 33 years as an employee of the Agricultural Research Service of the USDA in March 1998. On 1 April 1998, he began a new position in an endowed chair at Washington State University (WSU) created with a gift from the Washington Wheat Commission. His mission is to lead a research and education effort on direct seed cropping systems research. Later in the year, he will teach a 3-credit course on Advanced Cropping Systems at WSU.

Congratulations go from ISPP to Jim in his new roles.
