The BSPP Presidential Meeting 2002 "Plant Pathology
and Global Food Security"
The meeting will be held at Imperial College, London, UK,
from 8 - 10 July 2002. It will be used as a forum for addressing some of
the important policy issues that are affecting those working in tropical
agriculture, as well as those working on more fundamental aspects of plant
pathology that may have an impact on developing country agriculture. The
aim of the meeting is to mobilise discussion of the key issues and
publicise the role of plant pathology in addressing major global concerns.
The meeting will address the following themes:
-
Potential impacts of disease resistance biotechnology
in developing countries.
-
Global disease concerns and trade.
-
Sustainable disease management in agricultural systems
under threat.
-
Extension alternatives in the 21st Century.
The meeting will attract practitioners, scientists and
policy makers from around the world and the range of invited speakers will
reflect the international significance and importance of this topic area.

What works in Plant Pathology Teaching?
This issue will be addressed at an evening workshop at the
ICPP 2003 Congress, being held in New Zealand in February 2003. Various
speakers will give short presentations (followed by discussion) on methods
found to be effective in their own courses.
What works in distance education and teaching techniques
where resources are limited will also be covered in keynote presentations.
Congress participants are now invited to submit
presentations of five to ten minutes for this workshop. If you have a
teaching technique that works for you, please share it with others. E-mail
Cleo DArcy <c-darcy@uiuc.edu> for the presentation format and
submission details.

Database on molecular plant pathogen interactions
A new web site at <http://www.drastic.org.uk>
contains information on the molecular responses of plants to infection by
plant pathogens. It also is an important database of genes up- or
down-regulated in response to infection, treatment with chemicals that
modify resistance, and various abiotic stresses. The link to the
searchable database is one of the provided quick links. The information in
the database is derived from published information but uniquely brings
together expression data in a searchable format. The site contains
information on a wide range of plants.
Information for the database is welcome in order to make
it more complete and useful to everybody.

Discussion on Bioterrorism
At the Annual Meeting of The American Phytopathological
Society in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a symposium on bioterrorism will be held
on 28 July 2002 from 13.00-17.00 hours. The key subject under discussion
will be its possible impact on crop protection. Presentations will show
how changes in policies in the USA may affect research, what the actual
threat level may be, and what steps have been, and are being taken, to
prevent and respond to such attacks.
Dr R James Cook, of Washington State University and a past
President of the International Society for Plant Pathology, is organizer
of the symposium, Crop Biosecurity: Countering Agricultural
Bioterrorism. Dr Cook points out that, while most plant health
scientists believe the risk of a bioterrorist attack on the world’s food
crops is low, technological and scientific advances could easily change
that in the future. "It’s important not to overreact," says
Cook, "but we do need to be prepared." Of concern also is the
possible impact new regulations and legislation might have on research
activities. "There’s been a lot of talk about the need to tighten
security in the USA.," says Cook. "This is understandable and in
many areas much-needed. However, some of these initiatives could end up
having an unintended negative effect on the free flow of scientific
information."
The United States Department of Agriculture will provide
an update on the current regulatory climate and offer an opportunity for
participants to provide feedback on bioterrorism protection efforts.

Board Meeting of the European Foundation
(EFPP)
The Board will meet at 18.00 hours on 9 September 2002 in
Prague, Czech Republic, during the EFPP Conference (see Coming Events).
The General Secretary, J F JM van den Heuvel <hans.vandenheuvel@deruiterseeds.com>
draws attention to the facts that the EFPP Executive Committee is seeking
candidates for the offices of General Secretary (2002) and Treasurer
(2004), and also that there are bid opportunities for hosting the EFPP
Congress in 2006. He should be contacted before 31 July 2002 on these
items.
Chair of Advisory Council of Plant Management Network
(USA)
Dick Stuckey was recently appointed Chair of the Advisory
Council for the Plant Management Network (PMN). PMN is a newly created
on-line site serving scientists and practitioners working in applied plant
health and crop management. The network is the result of the collaborative
efforts of several scientific societies, academic institutions, industry
and government agencies. This integrated network provides for
communicating applied plant science information A major question for the
stakeholders and the PMN Advisory Council is deciding on coverage.
PMN began two years ago with the creation of the on-line
interdisciplinary journal Plant Health Progress,
which provides peer-reviewed articles and research reports for public and
private practitioners, growers, diagnosticians, researchers, advisors,
field personnel, manufacturers, regulatory officials, public policy makers
and others in the plant management field. With the addition of Crop
Management, a journal focusing on crop related topics, creators and
partners decided to expand the site to include other features and services
of use to the plant management community.
PMN is a first stop resource for plant practitioners,
being affordable and easy to use. An innovative aspect is that it receives
support and collaboration of affiliated organizations known as partners.
The partners help underwrite the cost of producing the site’s content
and help promote PMN to their respective audiences; encouraging
submissions and offering discounted access to the journals. The
interdisciplinary group of readers they attract enables the journals to
serve the plant science community at large and provide a forum for
information exchange among disciplines and professions world-wide.
Information on subscribing to PMN and becoming a partner
are available at the site’s homepage <http://www.plantmanagementnetwork.org>.
Current PMN partners include the American Phytopathological Society and
the American Society of Agronomy, a number of Universities in the USA,
Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. and Syngenta.

International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability
(IJAS)
Channel View Publications <info@channelviewpublications.com>
advised about this new journal. The Chief Editor is Professor Jules
Pretty, University of Essex, UK.
IJAS is a cross-disciplinary and peer-reviewed journal
dedicated to advancing the understanding of sustainability in agricultural
and food systems. IJAS will publish both theoretical developments and
critical appraisals of new evidence on what is not sustainable about
current or past agricultural and food systems, as well as on transitions
towards agricultural and rural sustainability at farm, community,
regional, national and international levels, and through food supply
chains. The editors and board welcome original and high-quality
contributions from all countries, and from scientists and practitioners
from both the natural and social sciences.
The publishers will use their three-tier pricing structure
based on the UNDP Human Development Index (http://www.undp.org). Libraries
in over 100 countries will be able to receive the Journal of
Agricultural Sustainability either completely free of charge
or at a substantially reduced rate.
