Call for Nominations - ISPP Executive
Committee (2003-2008)
As required by the Statutes and Rules of ISPP, Richard I
Hamilton, Past-President, ISPP, is issuing a Call for Nominations for the
Executive Committee of ISPP that will serve for the period 2003-2008. Four
positions require nominees: President, Vice-President, Secretary-General,
and Treasurer.
Any member of an ISPP-Associated Society can suggest
nominees. Names of nominees should be sent to the members of the Nomination
Committee (see below) directly or by a Councilor of an Associated Society.
It is essential that each nominee provide evidence of his or her
willingness to serve.
Nominations must be in the hands of the Nomination
Committee by 31 December 2001. The Nomination Committee will consider the
nominees for each office, and being cognizant for the need of geographical
diversity, will select two names for each office and send those names for
ratification by the current ISPP Executive Committee.
The Nomination Committee will complete its work by 31 May
2002. The list of nominees will be in the hands of the Secretary-General by
12 June 2002 and a ballot containing the names of two nominees for each
office will be prepared for transmittal to ISPP members.
To facilitate the work of the Nomination Committee, please
send names of all nominees to members of the entire membership of the
Committee whose names and e-mail addresses are given below:

Common Names of Plant Diseases
David Teakle at <teakle@biosci.uq.edu.au>,
Microbiology & Parasitology, The University of Queensland, Brisbane,
Queensland 4072, Australia, advises that the ISPP Committee for Common Names
(ISPP-CCN) has increased the number of Principles (guidelines) for naming
new diseases from three to seven. This follows discussions with Paul
Holliday (author of the "Dictionary of Plant Pathology" 1998) and
the American Phytopathological Society’s Committee for Common Names of
Plant Diseases.
The ISPP-CCN also has eight Working Rules designed to help
in achieving its aims of having internationally standardized names of plant
diseases.
The changes and the names and addresses of the members of
the Committee can be viewed on the ISPP-CCN Website at <http://www.isppweb.org/ccn.htm>.
Readers are encouraged to assist the ISPP-CCN by commenting on any problems
they see with either the Principles or the Working Rules.
Revised Common Names for Diseases of
Rapeseed and Caneberries
Official designations by the American Phytopathological
Society (APS) of common names for the diseases of rapeseed and caneberries
have been revised and are listed at <http://www.scisoc.org/resource/common/commentc.htm>.
Challenges by APS members should be made to the chair of the APS Committee
for the Standardization of Common Names for Plant Diseases, Melodie Putnam,
at <putnamm@bcc.orst.edu>.
ISPP members should contact David Teakle at <teakle@biosci.uq.edu.au>.
Asian Agriculture Congress
Professor Tang Wenhua, of the China Agricultural University
accepted an invitation to represent ISPP at the Asian Agriculture Congress
entitled "Food Security and Environmental Protection in the New
Millennium". He was requested by the ISPP President, Peter Scott, to
make a presentation with two themes; China’s priorities in food security
and environmental protection; The initiatives of ISPP in these areas.
The Congress was held from 24-27 April 2001, in Manila,
Philippines, and was organized by committees of the: 9th Congress of the
Society for the Advancement of Breeding Researches in Asia and Oceania (SABRAO)
and the 4th Conference of the Asian Crop Science Association (ACSA). Some

News from the American Phytopathological
Society
1) Information on work by plant pathologists and
meteorologists at North Carolina State University using the tools of weather
forecasting to predict the occurrence of tobacco blue mold and downy mildew
epidemics can be found at <http://www.apsnet.org>.
2) Basic tenets of the new APS journal Plant Health
Progress (PHP) are that it should be interdisciplinary,
interorganizational, and international. The journal should have the active
participation of all major plant health related organizations. Partners in
PHP provide the content, readership, and financial resources necessary for
the journal to be comprehensive for plant health practitioners. The journal’s
inaugural partners are credited at <http://www.planthealthprogress.org>.
By clicking on "Become a Partner", information will be found about
benefits for academics, extension workers, scientific and professional
societies, and industry. Sending an e-mail to PHP <partners@planthealthprogress.org>
helps with enrolling or arranging a more greater explanation of the
collaborative program.
3) The APS Public Policy Board (formerly the National Plant
Pathology Board) seeks nominations to join the Board. The activities of the
Board focus on providing scientific input to policy-making processes. The
recent activities of the Board can be found at <http://www.apsnet.org/members/ppb/top.asp>.
Persons in APS interested in this type of activity should contact the Board
Director, O W Barnett, at <ow_barnett@ncsu.edu>.
4) The Office of International Programs (OIP) group
membership plan allows access to APS for persons from appropriately
designated countries. It attracts plant pathologists in Universities or
institutions based in developing countries around the world. One membership
fee can be used to register up to five plant pathologists in a developing
country. See <http://www.apsnet.org/members/oip/group.asp>
for more information.
New web-site for the EFPP
Dr Hans van den Heuvel, General Secretary of the European
Foundation for Plant Pathology (EFPP), announces that the homepage of EFPP
has now moved to <www.efpp.net>.
Dr van den Heuvel also has a new address at <hans.vandenheuvel@deruiterseeds.com>.
Phytophthora in Forests and Natural
Ecosystems
This is a reminder about the Conference (IUFRO on
Phytophthora in Forests and Natural Ecosystems, see "Coming
Events") being held in Western Australia from 30 September-5 October
2001. Registrations and abstracts are still being accepted. See the web-site
at:
Western Australia is an ideal place to see the impact Phytophthora
can have on forests and natural ecosystems in the south-west of the state.
Approximately 2000 of 8000 plant species are susceptible to Phytophthora
cinnamomi. In addition to a wide range of discussions on the biology,
ecology, taxonomy, genetics and control of Phytophthora species in
natural ecosystems, there will be visits to some high impact sites and
inspections of control measures used.
