8th ICPP, 2 to 8 February 2003, Christchurch, New Zealand

The first announcement of this next International Congress for Plant Pathology (8th ICPP) has been distributed world-wide. It contains information about the Congress and also contains a form for Registration of Interest. If you or your plant pathology society have not received copies or want more then please contact Helen Shrewsbury at <shrewsbh@lincoln.ac.nz>. You can also visit the Congress website at <http://www.lincoln.ac.nz/icpp2003/> for information as well as to use the form there to register for further details.

The keynote themes for ICPP2003 are:

  • Plant pathology in the Asia/Pacific region.

  • Towards integrated management of soil-borne diseases.

  • Host-pathogen interactions.

  • Towards integrated management of air-borne diseases.

  • Knowledge transfer for plant pathology.

In addition there will be concurrent sessions on a range of topics, some of which will be related to the keynote themes. Pre- or post-congress workshops are in the planning stage and will be described in the next circular. This can be obtained by registering with the ICPP2003 organizers.

On-line Instructional Technology Symposium

Dr Gail Schumann thanks the ISPP Executive Committee for its enthusiastic support of the idea of an on-line instructional technology symposium and for financial support to the ISPP Teaching Committee towards the symposium.

The On-line Instructional Technology Symposium will be held from 15 May-30 June 2001. It will consist of presented "papers" of about 1,000 words with links to demonstrations, websites, etc. The general themes will be:

  • Internet technologies and the virtual plant pathology classroom

  • Packages used in teaching specific areas or topics in plant pathology

  • Research tools that can also be used for teaching

"Presenters" will be available at scheduled times for on-line discussions and questions about their materials.

The Symposium will also include on-line moderated forums for discussion of topics such as Internet for distance learning and internal courses, support (funding/technical) for teaching projects, copyright issues, academic recognition of instructional technology and instructional technology in resource-poor countries.

This Symposium will build on the technology workshop from the previous ISPP meeting, but will allow for longer periods of time for people to try various programs and demonstrations, on-line discussion, and, we hope, include a much broader audience of participants.

The planning committee consists of: Terry Stewart (chair), Cleo D’Arcy, Darin Eastburn, David Guest, Thorsten Kraska, James Partridge and Gail Schumann. They plan to have a website prepared by June 2000 outlining the structure of the event and guidelines for submissions. Terry Stewart will be webmaster and organizer and his institution, Massey University, New Zealand, will host the symposium.

This Symposium will also help to determine what programs will be most useful and interesting at the 2003 ICPP in New Zealand.

Please contact Gail L Schumann, Chair, ISPP Teaching Committee, University of Massachusetts, 209 Fernald Hall, Amherst MA 01003-2420, USA; Fax: +1-413-545-2532; e-mail: <Schumann@pltpath.umass.edu> with questions or needs for further information.

Esca and Phytopathologia Mediterranea

Esca, together with related grapevine declines, is one of the most important causes of loss to vineyards almost wherever grapes are grown.

The April 2000 issue of the International Journal Phytopathologia Mediterranea published 32 research papers based on presentations at the 1st International Workshop on Grapevine Trunk Diseases - Esca and Grapevine Declines, held at Siena, Italy, in October 1999. The meeting brought together about 100 scientists from 21 countries.

The issue contains 242 pages and has photographs (52 in colour) of diagnostic symptoms and pathogen structures. There are discussions of topics such as the latest hypotheses on the nature and origin of esca and related symptoms, the taxonomy and epidemiology of the fungi (Phaeoacremonium spp., Fomitiporia, etc.) involved in the diseases, fungal interactions with vines, and the causes of symptom expression and control.

This is important to all plant pathologists, especially those interested in grapevine diseases, and also to vinegrowers and viticulturists, since this is the first time that these diseases, which are becoming ever more important, are discussed so thoroughly.

The problems of esca and grapevine decline are still far from being solved. The current issue of Phytopathologia Mediterranea shows what has been done to date and outlines those problems where particular attention is needed.

With this special issue, dedicated to woody diseases of the grapevine, one of the most important Mediterranean crops, Phytopathologia Mediterranea, the international journal edited by the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union, appears in a completely new and redesigned format and layout, in the hope that it will further promote the diffusion of information about the phytopathological problems of the Mediterranean area. The journal deals with the main areas of plant pathology: epidemiology, control, biochemical and physiological aspects, and the application of molecular biology techniques to fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, etc. It publishes 3 issues per year, each of which includes review and original research papers, short notes and new disease reports. It also has book reviews of interest to Mediterranean phytopathologists.

The address for all members of the Council is: The Norwegian Crop Research Institute, Plant Protection Centre, Hoyskoleveien 7, N-1432 Aas, Norway; Fax: +47-64-94-92-26;
e-mail: <firstname.familyname@planteforsk.no>.

News from the American Phytopathological Society (APS)

A soybean genetic resources and genetic enhancement white paper is now available. In February 2000, the United Soybean Board Production Committee hosted a workshop to build consensus on research priorities and time frames needed to conduct research in the area of soybean genetic resources and genetic enhancement. The resulting white paper is available for review at <http://www.scisoc.org/opae>.

A new APSnet look and address is coming soon. The final touches are now being made to a newly revised APSnet website. In addition to easier navigation, there will be full site searchability and open access to the items used most, APSnet will soon be located at a new "www" address.

Kyrgyz Society for Plant Pathology

The Kyrgyz Society for Plant Pathology has been established with Dr Anara Chakaeva, Head of the Scientific and Production Centre for Plant Protection, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as President and representative on the International Society for Plant Pathology. The mycologist Svetlana Leonidovna Prikhod’ko is Secretary.

The Executive Committee of ISPP has approved an application for the new Society to be an Associated Society of the International Society for Plant Pathology.

Kyrgyzstan is an agricultural country, and almost all lands are divided among farmers and small peasant co-operatives. Fodder crops occupy 80 per cent and field and fruit crops 20 per cent of land areas. The owners of these lands at present have little or no idea of the fundamentals of plant protection.

A key initial part of the new Society’s program is a project on "Research on Ecologically Pure Means of Plant Protection (Biopesticides)". In order to estimate pesticides of natural plant origins, research is being organised in phases:

1. Study of the natural flora of Kyrgyzstan to reveal possible pesticides of vegetable origin.
2. Assessment of these pesticides for insecticide, fungicide, nematicide and rodenticide characteristics.
3. Collection and introduction of plants possessing pesticide characteristics.
4. Elaboration of technology for cultivation of plants with pesticide characteristics, processing and means of using them in the agricultural areas.

The new Society also seeks a possibility for two postgraduate students (who know a little English ) to visit a European country or the USA for practical training in the area of plant protection and for language practice during 1-2 years. The Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan has agreed to bear the travel costs if a potential host country sends an official letter of invitation with a confirmation that it agrees to bear the costs of living and accommodation. The training of such specialists during 1-2 years would allow communication more freely with foreign colleagues and enable other positive roles in international cooperation.

The ISPP Executive recognises that communication with other societies may suggest ways of developing other projects for priority objectives in plant pathology so that they may attract interest from donor agencies - such as the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank.

For more information, contact Dr Anara Chakaeva at <anara@krsu.edu.kg>.

IUBS General Assembly

Professor Antonio Graniti of the University of Bari will represent ISPP in Naples, Italy, from 7-12 November 2000 at the 27th General Assembly of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) . In doing so he will gather any information from the Assembly for dissemination within ISPP, and contribute views to the Assembly on behalf of ISPP as appropriate.

Professor Graniti may be contacted at Fax: +39-080-5442906; e-mail: <granitia@agr.uniba.it>.

Board Meeting of EFPP

The next Meeting of the Board of the European Foundation for Plant Pathology (EFPP) including delegates of member societies will be held during the 5th Congress of the EFPP on "Biodiversity in Plant Pathology" in Taormina-Giardini Naxos, Italy, during 18-22 September 2000. The General Secretary of EFPP <J.F.J.M.vandenHeuvel@plant.wag-ur.nl> is arranging the agenda and details about the Board Meeting.

More information about the Congress can be seen at <http://www.ipo.dlo.nl/ipowww/efpp/index.htm>.

Emerging diseases

The American Phytopathological Society (APS) ad hoc committee on emerging diseases needs assistance.

This committee is attempting to:

1) establish a system for the ongoing collection, evaluation, and dissemination of information on emerging and re-emerging plant diseases; and

2) determine the most serious diseases that could threaten crop production if the pathogens were introduced.

The committee chair, Dr L V Madden c/o <aps@scisoc.org>, asks for answers to the following two questions:

(a) What are three diseases that do not occur in your country or region now, but would be of major concern if the pathogens were introduced? Please answer on the crops you are most familiar with.

(b) What are three diseases that do occur in your country or region, but have become of great concern because of changing host, pathogen, or environment?

For both answers, please indicate the reason (e.g. major impact on international trade, direct economic losses, human toxin). This is not a scientific survey. The committee will not simply use the answers in creating a list. The answers will help identify criteria that plant pathologists use in determining what constitutes an emerging or re-emerging problem.
