The aims and scope go beyond plant pathology, beyond plants and beyond
agriculture. In order to attempt to meet the challenge of global food
security, the journal addresses the physical, biological and
socio-economic constraints, which not only limit food production but also
the ability of people to access a healthy diet. The journal will contain a
mixture of original refereed papers taking a synthetic view of the
science, sociology and economics of food production, agricultural
development, access to food, and nutrition, together with review articles,
case studies and letters to the editor.
The journal does not seek to duplicate the coverage of the many
publications that focus specifically on the component disciplines. Thus
"Food Security" includes reference to plant pathology, but
extends far beyond. There is no particular focus on plant pathology.
The initiative has been coordinated by ISPP from its origins in a
public forum at ICPP98 in Edinburgh, addressed by Nobel Peace Laureate Dr
Norman Borlaug. This resulted in the formation of ISPP's Task Force on
Global Food Security and then the emergence of the concept of a food
security journal, shaped under the influence of an Advisory Board, as
announced in the ISPP Newsletter in July 2007.
The Editor-in-Chief is Richard Strange, Honorary Professor, University
College London, Honorary Research Fellow, Birkbeck College, University of
London. r.strange@sbc.bbk.ac.uk

Anne Vidaver - ASM Award
Anne Vidaver, Professor of Plant Pathology, University of Nebraska,
Lincoln, USA http://plantpathology.unl.edu/Welcome/Directory/vidaver.htm
, is well known for her research and scholarship on phytopathogenic
bacteria and bacteria associated with plants. She is a very distinguished
member of the American Phytopathological Society and of ISPP.
The 2008 American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Founders Distinguished
Service Award now has been presented to her. This occurred during the
108th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held on
1-5 June 2008, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The Award recognizes her
outstanding contributions and commitment to the ASM as a volunteer at the
national level.
The ASM tribute indicates that, for 30 years, Anne has been an
outstanding leader and a persistent and effective advocate for research
and policy issues, especially in agricultural and environmental
microbiology. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM),
a two-time ASM Foundation Lecturer and a past Advisory Board member of the
Center for the History of Microbiology. Her ASM service also includes the
Committee on the Status of Women in Microbiology, the Procter & Gamble
Award Selection Committee and the Public and Scientific Affairs Board
Committee on Agricultural, Food and Industrial Microbiology, which she
chaired from 1994-2003. In addition, she has organized and moderated some
ASM symposia and participated in several AAM colloquia. Anne also has an
outstanding national service record. From 2000-2002, she served as Chief
Scientist for the USDA, where she chaired the Interagency Working Group
for the Microbe Project, which enabled a collaborative effort on genomic
sequencing of microbes that is now funded at over $20 million each year.
Congratulations from ISPP to Anne Vidaver.
Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria
Carolee Bull Carolee.Bull@ARS.USDA.GOV
and her ISPP Committee on Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria have
recently made several changes to their ISPP web-site. A comprehensive
treatment of the International Standards for Naming Pathovars of
Phytopathogenic Bacteria and listing of approved names is now joined by
provision for submission of published proposed names using the new web
form. The site also gives a history of the Committee and its membership,
details of the current committee and news of a special meeting at ICPP2008
in Turin. See: http://www.isppweb.org/about_tppb.asp

Associated Societies with ISPP
ISPP Councillors are asked to reply to Dr Greg Johnson secretary@isppweb.org
about his recently e-mailed request for their societies to provide reports
to ISPP for the period 2003-2008. The aim is to provide the ISPP community
with summaries of (i) activities being undertaken by Associated Societies
and (ii) achievements and issues of concern in the region where the
Society is active. The reports will be tabled and discussed at the ISPP
Council Meeting at the International Congress of Plant Pathology in
Torino, Italy, in August 2008, and also placed on the ISPP website for

Review on Biotic Plant Interactions
An International Conference on Biotic Plant Interactions was held in
Brisbane, Australia in March 2008, and a review of the papers presented is
now available as Peer M Schenk, Kenneth C McGrath, Matteo Lorito and

Grapevine Trunk Diseases
The International Council of Grapevine Trunk Diseases serves as a forum
for researchers from grape growing countries.
Important trunk disease problems in the grape industry include esca
(black measles) and Eutypa dieback in mature vineyards and dieback and
decline in newly planted vineyards. Esca in mature vines and decline in
young vines were associated with the same fungus, first named as
Phaeoacremonium chlamydosporum and later renamed as Phaeomoniella
chlamydospora. Possible inter-relationships of these diseases posed a need
for closer coordination between scientists working on them, and the idea
of an International Council on Grapevine Trunk Diseases was conceived.
The Council first met in California in July 1998, and agreed on
objectives and a structure for the Council. It was recognised also as a
Subject Matter Committee of ISPP in 2001 (see http://www.isppweb.org/nlaug01.asp
.
The Council and ISPP Committee is now chaired by Laura Mugnai
laura.mugnai @unifi.it helped by the following regional
