Idea of a Journal of
Food Security
The ISPP's Task Force on
Global Food Security has as its first activity "Raising awareness of
the impact of plant diseases on food security". One of the actions to
emerge from this is to explore the possibility of a Journal of Food
Security, a concept originating from within the Task Force and now seeking
to maximize interactions across other disciplines.
The concept takes as its
starting point:
"Malnutrition still
claims the lives of many, particularly the most vulnerable – 18,000
children every day according to one recent estimate. This is an appalling
tragedy in the true sense of the word, as such misery is avoidable: but
avoidance is seldom simple, as the scope of the proposed journal
demonstrates."
Of course inadequate
nutrition goes far beyond plant pathology, and indeed far beyond plants.
The concept of the journal would be to reflect the multifaceted nature of
the challenge of food security. It would be a journal of the science and
sociology of food production and access to food. It would include two
types of material: broad analyses of the complex constraints that deprive
large parts of the world population from effective access to nutritious
food, and research into overcoming such constraints. By focussing on these
issues in a single publication, it is intended that the journal will
provide a spur for the initiation and promotion of policies which will
co-ordinately address the spectre of hunger. It will focus on these issues
as such, rather than on the component disciplines separately.
The concept of the
journal is being considered by a distinguished Advisory Board that
includes four World Food Prize Laureates (Lodovica Gullino, Modadugu
Gupta, David Ingram, Osamu Ito, Gurdev Khush, Harry Kuiper, Hosny El
Lakany, Rattan Lal, Bill McKelvey, Kanayo Nwanze, Gabrielle Persley, Per
Pinstrup-Andersen, Ingo Potrykus, Pedro Sanchez, Carlos Seré, Prakash
Shetty).
Coordinating the
discussion, and considering how best to turn concept into reality, are two
members of ISPP's Task Force on Global Food Security; Peter Scott (E-mail)
and Richard Strange (E-mail),
who would be pleased to receive comments.

Election of ISPP
Executive Committee 2008-2013
In accordance with the
Rules of Procedure of ISPP, the Executive Committee has formed a
Nomination Committee. Its function is to invite, from ISPP's national and
other Associated Societies, proposals for nominees for election to the
2008-2013 Executive Committee of ISPP. From the nominees received, the
Nomination Committee selects two candidates for each office (President,
Vice-President, Secretary-General and Treasurer). Election is by ballot of
ISPP Councilors in 2007/8.
ISPP Statutes place
emphasis on geographical diversity in this process. The Executive
Committee has therefore agreed that Nomination Committee members should
loosely represent regions of the world. There are nine Nomination
Committee members, chosen for their association with: East and South-East
Asia; Europe; Middle East; North America; Oceania; South Asia; South and
Central America; Southern Africa; West, Central, East and North Africa.
Proposals of nominees are
now invited for consideration by the Nomination Committee. Representatives
(for example a Councilor) of an Associated Society of ISPP should send
their proposal to Peter Scott ( E-mail
) as Chairman of the Committee. Others should send their proposal through
a representative of an Associated Society.
Names and full contact
details (including e-mail address) should be sent. Evidence of a
nominee’s willingness to serve, if elected, must be provided. It would
be appreciated if nominations could arrive by 31 August 2007.
Information about ISPP
can be found at (Web).
The ISPP (founded in
1968) is the representative international body of plant pathology
societies. It is a member of the International Union of Biological
Sciences (IUBS), the International Union of Microbiological Sciences (IUMS),
and has liaison with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Those elected to the
executive committee enjoy responsibility and status in the discipline of
plant pathology. They are unpaid. They should expect to commit significant
effort to their office, and be rewarded with the satisfaction of having
the potential to make an important contribution to their discipline.

International Meeting
of three Societies of the Americas
A Latin American Congress
of Plant Pathology was held from 19–25 May 2007 in the Yucatan Peninsula
of Mexico, at Cancun. The
host society was the "Sociedad Mexicana de Fitopatologia"
(Mexican Society for Plant Pathology) that held its 34th annual meeting.
Participating also were two other societies. The Latin American
Association of Plant Pathology (Web), which held its 14th Congress of Plant Pathology, and the Caribbean
Division of the American Phytopathological Society (Web), which held its 47th Annual Meeting. A total of 324 abstracts were
published in the congress manual, representing 12 Oral Sessions and four
Poster Sessions.
This item was reported by
Dr Ed French, Executive Secretary of the Latin American Association (Email).
International
Conference on Bacterial Blight of Rice
Professor Jinsheng Wang (E-mail), Department

China; tel: 086-025-843-95178, reminds that the 1st International
Conference on Bacterial Blight of Rice (ICBB) under the Chair of H Kaku
was held in Tsukuba, Japan, in 2003. He now announces that the 2nd ICBB
will be held in Nanjing, China, from 1-3 October 2007. He invites viewing

Dr Amerika Singh
Dr Amerika Singh of the
National Centre for Integrated Pest Management (Web), Lal Bahadur Shastri Building, Pusa Campus, New Delhi 110 012, India,
died on 31 May 2007. His eldest daughter Dr Pratibha Singh told Dr Peter
Scott (ISPP Immediate Past-President) about his untimely death. Dr Scott
replied with a brief tribute and condolences. Pratibha may be contacted at

Food Safety Begins as
Vegetables Grow
The American
Phytopathological Society (APS) advises that monitoring vegetables while
they are growing is crucial in the prevention of contamination of fresh
produce with harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. Jeri D Barak,
research microbiologist with the US Department of Agriculture's
Agricultural Research Service in Albany, California, USA, has found that
organisms such as Salmonella use specific genes to colonize plants,
creating an active interaction with the plant surface, making them almost
inseparable from the vegetable.
She and other APS members
will present their latest food safety research and describe future
research needs at a symposium entitled “Cross Domain: Emerging Threats
to Plants, Humans, and Our Food Supply” on 30 July 2007 during the joint
meeting of APS and the Society of Nematologists at the Town and Country
Resort and Convention Center in San Diego, California, USA. See “Coming
Events”.
VI
International
Pineapple Symposium
The ISHS Secretariat
informs that Dr Domingo Haroldo Reinhardt (E-mail)
is convener of the VI International Pineapple Symposium that will be
organised in João Pessoa, Paraiba State, Brazil, from 18-23 November 2007
(see “Coming Events”). The Symposium is under the auspices of the
Pineapple Working Group, Section of Tropical Fruits, International Society
of Horticultural Sciences (ISHS). Dr Reinhardt advises that the second
announcement is available at (Web) where there is also a call for abstracts with further instructions.
