Witches' Broom Disease of Lime in Iran

Witches' broom disease (WBDL) is a very serious disease of acid lime (Citrus aurantifolia) that has devastated the lime industry in Iran. In 1998, 51 infected trees were found but in 2008 the number of infected trees was over 500,000 and many hectares of the cultivated area in limes had been destroyed. Based on damage assessments and gross estimates of decline between 1997 and 2008, and with the uncontrolled spread of the disease in the current absence of any proper control treatments, the production of lime is likely to cease within another five years.

Due to the importance, the Iranian Witches' Broom Disease of Lime Network (IWBDLN) was established under the supervision of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture. The purpose is to use all national and international scientific potential to manage and control the disease. All national and international researchers are welcome to join this network to compile information and also to assist in research programs.

Consequently Dr Mohsen Mardi wishes to announce this to ISPP members with a request to contact him.

Contact details are: Dr Mohsen Mardi, Head of Genomics Department, Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran, Manager of Iranian Witches' Broom Disease of Lime Network (IWBDLN), Mahdasht Road, Karaj, Iran, P. O. Box: 31535-1897. Tel: +98-261-2700845. Fax: +98-261-2704539. E-mail:  mardi@abrii.ac.ir   or  iwbdln@abrii.ac.ir. See:  http://www.abrii.ac.ir/   or  http://www.iwbdln.ir/.

10th International Fusarium Workshop

The 10th International Fusarium Workshop was held in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy from 30 August through 2 September 2008, immediately after ICPP2008 in Turin, Italy. It was run by the Fusarium Subject Matter Committee (SMC) of the International Society of Plant Pathology (ISPP) http://www.isppweb.org/nljan08.asp#3 . The local organizers were Quirico Migheli and Virgilio Balmas and they assembled a group of two hundred and thirty Fusarium workers to a meeting organized around topics ranging from genomics and systematics to diagnostics and disease management.

The Fusarium workshops have been held every 5 years in conjunction with the International Congresses of Plant Pathology. The next workshop is being planned by the newly elected Chair Ulf Thrane and Vice-Chair David Geiser of the ISPP Fusarium SMC and will be held in conjunction with ICPP2013 in Beijing.

Food Security

The first issue of the new multidisciplinary journal "Food Security: The Science, Sociology and Economics of Food Production and Access to Food" will appear in March 2009. It will be published quarterly by Springer in print and online, as an official publication of ISPP, as can be seen at http://www.springer.com/life+sci/agriculture/journal/12571.

The new journal has two aims: (1) to define the constraints that prevent over one billion of the world's population from accessing a diet which is sufficiently nutritious to allow full development of physical and mental potential and (2) to address the means by which these constraints may be overcome. "Food Security" will cover: global food needs, the mismatch between population and the ability to provide adequate nutrition, global food potential, natural constraints to satisfying global needs for food, forest and fibre, nutrition, food quality and food safety, as well as socio-political factors that impinge on the ability to satisfy global food needs. The journal will contain a mixture of original refereed papers, review articles, case studies, commentaries and letters to the editor. The editor-in-chief is Dr Richard Strange of Birkbeck College, University of London, UK, E-mail.

The new journal is appearing as FAO reports that high food prices have pushed an additional 40 million people into hunger in 2008, increasing the total number of starving people to 14 percent of the world's population. This world situation may deteriorate as the financial crisis hits many real economies. Most of the undernourished people live in a group of countries, with 65 percent in India, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Ethiopia. See:  http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/8836/icode/.

The first issue of "Food Security", and selected items from future issues, will be available free online. ISPP Members and Members of ISPP Associated Societies can subscribe to the journal for €30 per annum. See:  http://www.isppweb.org/about_fs_flyer.asp.

Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria

The Committee on the Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria of the International Society of Plant Pathology has just published a manuscript on the taxonomy of plant pathogenic bacteria. The goal of the manuscript is to help clarify issues related to nomenclature and classification.

Bull, CT, SH De Boer, TP Denny, G Firrao, M Fischer-Le Saux, GS Saddler, M Scortichini, DE Stead, Y Takikawa. (2008). Demystifying Nomenclature of Bacterial Plant Pathogens. Journal of Plant Pathology 90:403-417.

The manuscript will become available from the Journal of Plant Pathology at  http://www.sipav.org/main/jpp/jol.htm, and can be downloaded from the ISPP website at  http://www.isppweb.org/about_tppb.asp.

The Committee is finishing a new version of the list "Names of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria". Please use the form available on the ISPP website to submit names to the Committee to ensure that they are listed if appropriate. (Click the "Submit a Name" link on the list on the left).

Plant Abiotic Stress

A meeting entitled "Plant Abiotic Stress - from signaling to development" will be held in Tartu, Estonia from 14-17 May 2009.

The meeting is being organized by the European Union COST Action FA605 - International Network of Plant Abiotic stress (INPAS). The goal of INPAS is to build an international network on plant abiotic stress. The research priorities of the action are centered on complementary expertise allocated into four Working Groups: Functional characterization of protein kinases; Genetic identification of signaling factors; Expression of genes involved in the production of osmo-protectants; Integrated molecular analysis of the polyamine metabolic pathway.

The invited speakers are: Nam-Hai Chua, Tamas Dalmay, John Doonan, Simon Gilroy, Maarten Koornneef, Matthieu Reymond, Montserrat Pages, Oscar Ruiz and Jian-Kang Zhu.

The deadline for a reduced registration fee (only 120 EUR) and early abstract submission (to be used for selection of oral presentations) is 17 March 2009.

International Conference in Pakistan

In 2005, a meeting of leading mycologists and plant pathologists decided to establish the Mycophytoathological Society of Pakistan (MYCOPS). This Society saw the need to look to the future to position its disciplines to meet societal needs and scientific opportunities. The Society is working at bridging the gap between academia and industry. MYCOPS started at the Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology, University of Punjab, Lahore. It is separate from the Phytopathological Society of Pakistan and has its own Executive committee. MYCOPS is regularly publishing the scientific journal "Mycopath".

As its first biennial meeting, MYCOPS wil hold the First International Conference of Mycops as "Mycovision in Agriculture" in the Institute of Mycology and Plant Pathology, University of Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan (click here). The meeting will be held from 9-11 November 2009. The Organiser and Chairman is Professor Dr Rukshana Bajwa  director@mpp.pu.edu.pk . More information may be obtained from the Conference Secretary Dr Sarwar Alam  drssalam@yahoo.com.
