For information, see (  http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=9850 ).

Since the last International Fusarium workshop in 2003, the genomes of four plant pathogenic Fusarium strains have been sequenced (F. graminearum, F. solani, F. oxysporum and F. verticillioides). To recognize the increasing importance of research on Fusarium genomes, 10th International Fusarium Workshop will meet concurrently with the Fusarium Genomics Workshop 2008 in Alghero. Following is a program of the joint meetings:

ISPP Teaching Committee

Dr Terry Stewart ( T.Stewart@massey.ac.nz ) has advised that Associate Professor Darin Eastburn is the new Chair of the ISPP Teaching Committee. Terry will be staying on the committee as past chairman.

Darin Eastburn's contact details are 64 National Soybean Research Center, MC 637, 1101 W Peabody Drive, Urbana, Illinois 61801, USA. Phone: +1-217-244-9632; e-mail: ( eastburn@uiuc.edu ).

Focus on Soybean

Miles Wimer ( mwimer@scisoc.org ), Director of the Plant Management Network (PMN), announces the launch of its next-generation resource for those involved in soybean production and management. Focus on Soybean is an online-only web portal for growers, crop consultants and researchers seeking information on producing healthy and high-yielding soybean crops.

The central feature of Focus on Soybean is its educational webcasts. These currently include 15 narrated presentations totalling over five hours of talks targetted toward consultants and producers. All are authored by university extension specialists recognized for their expertise and research related to soybean management practices.

The first round of webcasts includes the following from the USA, with others planned: · Choosing Specialty Soybeans for the Right Niche Markets, Palle Pedersen, Iowa State University · Soybean Production: Variety Selection, Planting Date Decisions, Row Spacing, and Seeding Rates, Shawn Conley, University of Wisconsin-Madison · The Reality of Asian Soybean Rust: Lessons Learned from Three Years of Management, Bob Kemerait, University of Georgia · Soybean Cyst Nematode: Biology, Scouting, and Management, Greg Tylka, Iowa State University · Soybean Sudden Death Syndrome, John C. Rupe, University of Arkansas · Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Soybean: Pathology and Management, Craig Grau, University of Wisconsin-Madison · Soybean Viruses: Biology, Symptoms, and Management, Loren Giesler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

In addition to the webcasts, Focus on Soybean includes two other resources. One, "Search Soybean Information", provides several search engines whereby readers can locate soybean-related information found either on the PMN site or on its 62 partner websites. This information includes university extension publications, journal articles, images, and products from PMN's partner organizations. The other area, "Featured Soybean Websites," identifies additional soybean web resources, like PMN's Soybean Rust Information Center.

Focus on Soybean is the first in a series of crop-specific resources targeted to agricultural professionals. It is accessible by a low-cost annual subscription that includes all of PMN's current and future electronic resources, including future Focus topics, for a single price. PMN supports itself through subscriptions and partnerships.

Climate Change and Food Security

The probable effects of climate change on agriculture and forestry including implications for food security are addressed in several review papers in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America on 11 December 2007.

Cacao Diseases

Seeds or beans of cacao are the source of chocolate, beloved by many as a drink or confection. Cacao production occurs in a few tropical regions of the world and is threatened by a number of important and interesting diseases. Learn about these diseases, their biology and management in the symposium on cacao diseases, in the December 2007 issue of Phytopathology.

China and CIMMYT co-operation

According to China View, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences [CAAS] signed an agreement on 4 December 2007 to cooperate with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) to combat a new strain of wheat stem rust. The project involves testing several thousand wheat samples provided by both sides.

It is believed the new wheat stem rust strain, which is dubbed "Ug99" and has already spread to the Middle East, would most likely encroach into major Asian wheat production areas.

Shi Yanquan said at the signing ceremony that it would take 3 years to complete the project. He added China had cooperated with CIMMYT for more than 3 decades. See: ( http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-12/04/content_7199323.htm ).

African Women in Agricultural Research

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Gender and Diversity Program launched a US$13 million grant to support fast-tracking of careers of over three hundred African women in agricultural research. The African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and based in Nairobi, was initiated to address the disparity between the role of African women in farming and their limited presence in agricultural science.

The program aims not only to increase the numbers of graduates in agricultural science, but also to increase the awareness on the importance of women's voices and contributions to African agriculture. AWARD is an aftermath of successful pilot fellowship programs conducted in 2005-2008 in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation, USAID and the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture. Its current focus will be on mentoring, building science capacity, and leadership development in women from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia.

Helping Overcome Poverty in the Third World

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Executive Board approved more than US$263 million in loans and grants to help rural people in Asia, Africa and Latin America overcome poverty. This includes a US$6.24 million grant to support agricultural research and development activities in rural regions of poor countries.
