In this issue:
ISPP contribution to ICPP 2003 in
Christchurch, New Zealand
The Executive Committee of ISPP has received the budget for
the next International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP 2003) from Ron
Close and as a consequence has advised Ian Harvey and the Organising
Committee in New Zealand that ISPP would make some commitments, as follows:
1) to the Bursary Fund for ICPP 2003, tied to support for
delegates attending from developing countries.
2) to ICPP 2003 without ties.
ISPP attaches considerable importance to the building of a
strong Bursary Fund, and encourages the congress organisers to go for a
higher target than currently envisaged, expecting that lower registration
and local costs will be off-set by higher international travel costs.
International Sclerotinia Workshop
The ISPP Executive Committee has received an application for
funding from Jim Steadman of the University of Nebraska as Convenor of the
Sclerotinia Subject Matter Committee. The application provided a budget for
the XI International Sclerotinia Workshop to be held from 8-12 July 2001 in
York, UK.
ISPP has agreed to contribute to the cost of running the
workshop, which will include a presentation by a visiting speaker, Dr Linda
Kohn of the University of Toronto.
Taxonomy of Bacterial Plant Pathogens
The ISPP Committee on the Taxonomy of Bacterial Plant
Pathogens has created a website at: <http://www.isppweb.org/about_tbbp.asp>.
At present the following items are posted:
-
The names and addresses of the ISPP Committee on
the Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria
-
An up to date list of names of plant pathogenic
bacteria
-
The International Standards for Naming Pathovars
-

International Society for Horticultural
Science
Chronica Horticulturae, the magazine of the
International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), in its 4th number
for the year 2000, carried a report from the President of ISHS on the
Council, Executive Committee and Board meetings held from 27 October to 1
November 2000 in Egypt.
Mention was made of bids being made for the Societys
International Congress in the year 2010. Two groups were bidding to hold
this Congress. One is Australia/New Zealand, as mentioned in the ISPP
Newsletter of December 2000, and the other is Spain/Portugal.
The ISHS web-site is <http://www.ishs.org>.
Towards an ASEAN-AVRDC Network
A network was proposed by Singapore in 1998 for the
promotion of sustainable and improved production of vegetables for domestic
consumption and trade. The network is now envisaged as enhancing vegetable
research and development co-operation and helping to develop indigenous
vegetable-related industries within the ten countries of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN in turn wishes to capitalize on the
Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centres (AVRDCs) considerable
experience in networking towards this type of end.
At a recent meeting in Singapore in September 2000, an
important step forward was taken with the drafting and acceptance of eight
regional project proposals within the ASEAN-AVRDC Regional Network for
Vegetable Research and Development (AARNET). These proposals are being
submitted to a meeting under the ASEAN Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry
for endorsement.
Further information may be obtained from AVRDC-OPC; Fax:
