ISPP and the World Food Summit: five years
later
FAO will soon host a global meeting to review progress
towards ending hunger. The meeting, the World Food Summit: five years later,
is intended to track progress achieved since the 1996 World Food Summit and
consider ways to accelerate the process.
As stated in the October 2001 issue of the ISPP Newsletter,
the Summit was originally scheduled for 5-9 November 2001 but was delayed in
the aftermath of the 11 September attacks in the United States.
"Unfortunately the present international circumstances and the loss of
so many innocent lives and the crisis that followed have led us to seek
postponement of such an event," said Jacques Diouf, Director-General of
FAO. The FAO Council is expected to decide on a revised date at its next
meeting.
Updates may be sought at <http://www.fao.org/worldfoodsummit>.
Plant Health Progress
Searching the internet for specific plant health information
typically yields mixed results. A good on-line solution is to use Plant
Health Progress at <www.planthealthprogress.com>,
an interdisciplinary journal offering a comprehensive assortment of applied
and practitioner-oriented material. It is designed for public and private
practitioners, growers, diagnosticians, researchers, advisors, field
personnel, manufacturers, regulatory officials and public policy makers.
It has a collaborative and searchable database of content.
Editor-in-Chief Timothy Murray states that anyone is invited to submit
articles to Plant Health Progress, the goal being to
become the Internet’s premier source of information on all aspects of
plant health maintenance. Both peer-reviewed and fully citable, the journal
is a refereed internet only publication and it aims to serve practitioners
worldwide.
Plant Health Progress has support and
collaboration from affiliated organizations known as partners. Partnership
is open to any organization interested in growing healthy plants, including
educational and research institutions, extension organizations, scientific
and professional societies, government agencies, corporations and small
businesses.
For more about the submission process, go to <www.planthealthprogress.org>
and select "Submission Guidelines" from the menu on the left of
the screen. Information on becoming a partner can be obtained by e-mailing
<partners@planthealthprogress.org>.
Subscription information is available at <http://www.planthealthprogress.org/about/subscribetop.htm>.

Ninth International Fusarium
Workshop
The Ninth International Fusarium Workshop will be
held at the University of Sydney, Australia, from 27-30 January 2003. The
meeting is held in conjunction with the International Congress of Plant
Pathology at Christchurch, New Zealand, and is on during the week prior to
the ICPP meeting.
Program
We hope to have an interesting and diverse program and will
include opportunities for microscope displays in which a wide range of
cultures of Fusarium species will be available for your perusal.
There will be sessions focussing on the following areas:-
-
Taxonomy and new species descriptions
-
Molecular biology and phylogenetics
-
Pathology and disease epidemiology
-
Genetics
-
Ecology and biogeography
-
Mycotoxins and mycotoxicoses
There will be opportunities for oral and poster
presentations.
Social Program
There will be a welcome reception and a conference dinner;
the costs for this are included in the registration fee. Please inquire with
the conveners for costs for partners for either of these functions.
Accommodation
There are several types of accommodation that are available
in close proximity to the venue for the meeting. At the University student
college dormitory style accommodation is available and is the closest and
cheapest accommodation; it is however un-air conditioned and it can be hot
and humid in Sydney at this time of year. There are a number of motels close
to the University that can vary in price from moderate to expensive (at
least in Australian dollars!).
Registration
The cost of the workshop is A$450 (US$225) – this includes
a welcome reception, a conference dinner, morning and afternoon tea/coffee
and lunch for each day. If you are interested in attending this meeting
please register to allow us to plan the workshop effectively. Registration
forms can be obtained from Dr Brett Summerell, Royal Botanic Gardens,
