A First for ISPP’s Teaching Committee
ISPP’s Subject Matter Committee on Teaching has
achieved a remarkable first by hosting an On-line Symposium covering
Instructional Technology in Plant Pathology.
Between 15 May and 30 June 2001, lively on-line
discussion between plant pathologists all over the world took place on a
variety of topics. They are listed below. More important, the complete
archive and opportunity for feedback are available for you to examine and
respond to at: <http://www.ispp-itsymposium.org.nz/>.
Dr Terry Stewart of Massey University, New Zealand, was
the webmaster for the event and was a member of the planning committee along
with Drs Cleora D’Arcy, Darin Eastburn, David Guest, Thorsten Kraska,
James Partridge, and Gail Schumann.
How the Symposium worked
Every eight days, a theme was presented and an associated
forum opened.
Themes consisted of presented papers, together with a
discussion board for each one. Authors were available for that period, to
answer questions and clarify points regarding their paper.
Forums were discussion areas dealing with issues pertinent
to the named topic. These forums were moderated and each one ran for one
period with the exception of the General Discussion forum which was open for
the duration of the symposium.
Authors from seven countries submitted 26 papers. There
were 321 registrants from 48 countries.

A Call for Bids to Host the 9th ISPP Congress in 2008
The Secretary-General of the International Society for
Plant Pathology (ISPP), Charlie Delp, has issued a call for bids to host the
9th ICPP and set a deadline for their receipt as 1 March 2002.
The criteria for selecting an ISPP Congress site:
1) Invitations (bids) must come from a national society or combination of
societies and not from a city or national convention bureau. On the
other hand, the society or societies making a bid should consider working
with a local convention bureau to help identify and advertise the unique
features of their country that will interest the delegates.
2) The financial obligations of hosting an International Congress of Plant
Pathology are the responsibility of the host national society (or
societies). ISPP does not underwrite the financing of the Congress.
3) The national society (or societies) hosting the Congress is responsible
for organizing the program, and therefore must be sufficiently large and be
able to provide leadership in each of the traditional sections such as
virology, mycology, biotechnology, seed pathology, epidemiology,
phytobacteriology, etc. The program of any past congress may be
consulted for a complete list of the sessions. Some help can be
expected from ISPP committees and Working Groups.
4. The site (city and hotels/campus) must be able to accommodate more than
2000 delegates and provide meeting rooms for up to 10 concurrent sessions,
as well as numerous small meeting rooms. The site should offer a
variety of eating places representing a range of costs. Ideally, a
university campus should be near to provide low-cost accommodations for
those unable to afford more expensive hotels and meals.
5. The host city must be easily accessible by international airlines and
offer a variety of cultural and tourist attractions. One day of the
Congress is normally scheduled for tours of local unique attractions.
National Societies wishing to make a bid to host the 9th International
Congress of Plant Pathology are welcome to contact the ISPP President, Peter
Scott, at <p.scott@cabi.org> and/or the ISPP Secretary-General at <charliedelp@hotmail.com>
for further details. See also the ISPP web site at <http://www.isppweb.org>.
By March 2002, the bid must be sent to all ISPP Councilors who will be asked
to vote on competing bids. This can be facilitated by use of ISPP List,
which is an e-mail link to most Councilors, and the use of a web site.
International Council of Grapevine Trunk Diseases (ICGTD)
The International Council of Grapevine Trunk Diseases has
been welcomed as a Subject Matter Committee of ISPP.
In recent years trunk disease problems have emerged that
are of paramount importance to the grape industry. They include the
resurgence of esca (black measles) and Eutypa dieback in mature vineyards,
and of decline diseases of young vines in newly planted vineyards. These
diseases were attracting attention from scientists in California, France,
Italy, South Africa and Australia, but the research was often conducted in
isolation and there was little exchange of the rather fragmentary
information.
The realization that both esca in mature vines and
decline in young vines were associated with the same fungus, and the naming
of that fungus as Phaeoacremonium chlamydosporum (later renamed Phaeomoniella
chlamydospora) focussed the attention of researchers on possible
inter-relationships of these diseases. The need for closer coordination
between scientists working on these diseases was realized, and the idea of
an International Council on Grapevine Trunk Diseases was conceived.
The first Council meeting took place in California in
July 1998, and agreed on objectives and a structure for the Council. The
Council serves as a forum for researchers from grape growing countries.
The Council executive consists of a chairman - Luigi
Chiarappa, and four regional coordinators: Laura Mugnai, Pedro Crous, Lucie
Morton, Ian Pascoe. The Secretariat would be shared with the International
Ampelography Society.
The 1st International Workshop on Grapevine Trunk
Diseases – Esca and Grapevine Declines" was jointly organized with
the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union and held in Siena, Italy in 1999.
There were 95 scientists as registered participants representing 21
countries. A 2nd meeting is organized for September 2001 in Lisbon, Portugal
(see "Coming Events") A third meeting is planned for the
International Congress of Plant Pathology in Christchurch in February 2003.

Latin American Phytopathological Congresses
The XI Latin American Phytopathological Congress (XI
Congreso Latinoamericano de Fitopatologia) is taking place from 5-10 August
2001 in Sao Pedro, SP, Brasil. During this event Vice-president Dr Jose M
Amador will assume the Presidency and the responsibility to organize the XII
Latin American Phytopathological Congress that will take place from 6–11
April 2003 at the Radison Hotel, Isla del Padre, Valle del Rio Grande,
Texas-USA. This event will be joint with the Annual Meetings of the

Sclerotinia 2001
The XIth International Sclerotinia Workshop took place at
CSL from 9-11 July 2001. This was the first time the Workshop had been held
outside North America and the first meeting of the Sclerotinia Committee of
the ISPP. It says something for the original group that of the 84 delegates
39 came from North America. Sixteen were from continental Europe, five from
New Zealand, one from Australia, one from India and four from South America.
Only 19 were from the UK and this included one Frenchman and a research
student from China! Accommodation was provided at the University of York and
a coach service was organised to bring the delegates to CSL. This
arrangement worked surprisingly well.
There was a scientific programme of 28 platform
presentations and some 46 posters. The keynote paper was presented by
Professor Linda Kohn of the University of Toronto on the population dynamics
of Sclerotinia and the implications for disease management. Other
papers fell into three groups, the biology of the pathogen, disease control
- both biological and chemical, and its epidemiology.
The social side was not forgotten and an afternoon trip
was made to Whitby followed by a Mediaeval Banquet held in St Williams’s
College in York, established in 1461.
Financial support from ISPP, BSPP, Syngenta and Blackwell
Science is gratefully acknowledged.
The papers will be available on the BSPP web-site at <www.bspp.org.uk>.
