ISPP Events at the ACPP 2000 in
Beijing, August 2000
The International Society for Plant Pathology is
convening two gatherings to be held during the 1st Asian Conference on Plant
Pathology in Beijing, China, in August 2000. They are:
1) an ISPP Executive Meeting. This will be the first
formal meeting of the executive of ISPP, apart from numerous e-mail
interchanges, since the last meeting at the ICPP in Edinburgh in August
1998,
and
2) a Media Workshop on the "Role of Plant Pathology
in Sustainable Agriculture", as part of the work of the ISPP Task Force
on Global Food Security (see <http://www.isppweb.org/gfsrep1.htm#ack>).
ISPP Income and Expenditure Account

Planning towards ICPP 2003 in
Christchurch, New Zealand
Charlie Delp, the ISPP Secretary-General, has recently
visited the organisers of the next International Congress of Plant Pathology
(ICPP 2003) in New Zealand. He is reporting to the ISPP Executive at its
meeting in Beijing, China, in late August 2000, that the Congress plans are
in good hands for both the professional program and for provision of most
convenient, comfortable, spacious and well-run facilities.
Ian Harvey, Richard Falloon and Ron Close are leading a group of colleagues
in a creative and inspiring way. Most of these colleagues are in New Zealand
but some are in Australia. A network of plant pathologists throughout New
Zealand are also involved in various ways in the organisation of the
scientific and technical programmes and in canvassing for sponsorship
funding. They are teamed with experienced people in the Professional
Development Group at Lincoln University for logistics and with others nearby
for conference housing and workshops.
Asian Association of Societies for
Plant Pathology (AASPP)
Professor Tang WenHua, Secretary General of the
Organizing Committee of ACPP2000, and colleagues have been very busy
preparing a draft constitution and three possible emblems for the new Asian
Association of Societies for Plant Pathology (AASPP). They have circulated
these widely as a basis for obtaining input, agreement and choices on these
two founding components of the association.
Further information can be obtained from Zaifeng Fan <fanzf@mail.cau.edu.cn>.
Journal of Russian Phytopathological
Society
Professor Yuri T Dyakov, Editor, at <dyakov@1.mycol.bio.msu.ru>
is glad to inform that the first issue of "Journal of Russian
Phytopathological Society" is published. Please inform colleagues
and libraries about it. For a year’s subscription, please contact Mr
Alexey Sacharov at Company MK-Periodica, B Yakimanka, 39, Moscow, 117109,
Russia; Fax: +238-4634.
Phytoparasitica - Israel Journal of
Plant Protection Sciences
Vivian R Priel, Executive Editor, would like to introduce
Phytoparasitica, the Israel Journal of Plant Protection Sciences.
This peer-reviewed journal publishes original research contributions on the
biological, chemical and molecular aspects of Entomology, Plant Pathology,
Virology, Nematology, and Weed Sciences, including Trilogy (insecticides,
fungicides, herbicides) and other biocides. Emphasis is laid on new
approaches in the control of pests and diseases.
In its electronic edition at <http://www.phytoparasitica.org>,
Phytoparasitica is fully searchable, by subject, keyword, title and
author. Visitors to the site can access and download all archived material,
including entire articles, from volumes 24 (1996), 25 (1997),
and 26 (1998); for volumes 27 (1999) and 28 (2000).
Access to abstracts and key words, as well as to authors via direct e-mail,
is available to all visitors to the site; subscribers are able to download
entire articles, with access via a password.
Each manuscript accepted by the journal is immediately
placed on-line in corrected page-proof form, prior to print-edition
publication. The early on-line release of these articles may represent a
difference of several months in the availability of research results to the
scientific community.
Phytoparasitica presently appears four times a year,
in both print and electronic edition. Starting with volume 29 (2001),
the journal will appear five times a year. In order to serve a wider
audience of readers, the subscription options for the year 2001 are also
being expanded, with the following rates for individuals as direct
subscribers: Print + Internet edition: $200; Internet edition: $100. [The
2001 rates through agents are $250 for the Print + Internet edition; $180
for the Internet edition.]
Please take a few minutes to visit the web site, which
already includes the third issue of volume 28 (2000). It is hoped
that it will be of interest. To submit an article, click on
"Information for authors"; to subscribe to the journal, click on
"Here to subscribe".
With any questions, please contact Vivian R Priel,
Executive Editor, Phytoparasitica, Priel Publishers, P O Box 2385, Rehovot
76123, Israel; Phone: +972-8-936-5757; Fax: +972-8-936-5858; e-mail: <apriel@netvision.net.il>.

APS News
The American Phytopathological Society (APS) has news
that:
1) "Pathogen population genetics and breeding for
disease resistance" is an APSnet July 2000 feature at<www.scisoc.org>
presenting a close-up look at two pathosystems where pathogen population
genetics are making an impact on resistance breeding.
2) "A white paper on biotechnology has been
issued" on 12 July 2000 concerning the promise of agricultural
biotechnology to alleviate hunger and poverty in the Third World. Two
members of APS, Jim Cook and Luis Sequira, participated in the writing of
the document. The full text can be seen at the National Academy of Science
website <http://books.nap.edu/html/transgenic>.
3) New CD-ROMs on "Diseases of Small Fruits",
"Diseases of Vegetables" and "Nutrient Deficiencies and
Toxicities of Plants" have arrived at APS Press headquarters and are
being shipped to customers. Others may order now. Visit <www.scisoc.org/apspress>
for more details.
