INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER ON PLANT PATHOLOGY

ISPP Newsletter 29 (2) April 1999

In this issue:

APS and CPS in Montreal, Canada

The American Phytopathological Society (APS) and Canadian Phytopathological Society (CPS) are holding a joint Annual Meeting in Montreal, Canada, in August 1999 (see "Coming Events"). The theme of the meeting is "Plant Health: Meeting the Challenges". The two societies believe that the challenge of plant health management has never been more demanding. Emerging and re-emerging pathogens are causing diseases on plants throughout the world, and the economic and social impact is often severe, particularly in interaction with new political and regulatory scenes. In North America, consumers are often completely unaware of consequent crises in rural areas.

Some 2,000 participants are expected from many countries around the world, so an excellent opportunity will exist to build contacts within the profession and to take part in sessions with an emphasis on recent advances and issues in research, teaching, extension and outreach.

There will be special sessions and six joint symposia as core activities.

21st Century Science

A world conference on science is being held in Budapest, Hungary, from 26 June to 1 July 1999, as part of the overall activities of UNESCO but it is being co-sponsored also by the independent organisation, the International Council for Science (ICSU). It will be organised around keynote speeches and three fora, which are:

1. Science: achievements, shortcomings and challenges.

2. Science in society.

3. Toward a new commitment to science.

The third forum will be concerned with an increased commitment to science by governments, policy makers and others and with obligations towards society on the part of the scientific community.

The ICSU Secretariat may be contacted in Paris, France, at Fax: +33-1-4288-9431; e-mail: <secretariat@icsu.org>.

Italy

The Secretary of Societa’ Italiana di Patologia Vegetale (SIPaV), the Italian Phytopathological Society, advises that the current membership of the Society is 330. A new Council was elected for 1999-2001 as:

President: Dr Antonino Catara, Professor at Catania University;

Vice-President: Dr Antonio Ragozzino, Professor at Naples University;

Immediate Past-President: Dr Alberto Matta, Professor at Turin University;

Secretary-Treasurer: Dr Giacomo Lorenzini, Professor at Pisa University;

Members: Dr Luciana Corazza, Research Scientist at MIPA, Rome; Dr Luisa Rubino, Research Scientist at CNR, Bari; Dr Paolo Magro, Professor at Viterbo University; Dr Ruggero Osler, Professor at Udine University; Dr Alessandro Ragazzi, Professor at Florence University.

A web-site is operative at <http://www.agr.unipi.it/sipav>. Further information also may be obtained from: Prof. Giacomo Lorenzini, Sez. Patologia Vegetale, DCDSL Universita, 56010 San Piero a Grado, Pisa - Italy; Phone: +39 050 960092; Fax +39 050 960622; e-mail: <glorenz@agr.unipi.it>.

Veronica Moschione

I would like to acknowledge and thank Veronica Moschione for arranging the printing and distribution of the hard-copy of 30 issues of the ISPP Newsletter from February 1994 to December 1998. This included maintaining and up-dating the mailing list and then interacting every second month with the Printing Service of The University of Sydney for further processing.

Veronica did this among her many duties as Administrative Assistant to The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sydney, Professor Lester Burgess. She is now leaving the Faculty after 15 years and will become Assistant to the Director of the National Voice Centre at The University of Sydney from a date in early April.

It is just as well that mailing of 800 copies of the Newsletter every second month has now ceased with the adoption of internet publication, but thank you Veronica for all of your enterprise and efficiency over the years. Brian Deverall.

First Australasian Soilborne Disease Symposium

The First Australasian Soilborne Disease Symposium was held in Queensland, Australia, from 9-12 February 1999. It was attended by 148 delegates, mostly from Australia, but with a number from other countries. The Symposium was divided into 10 Sessions, with a Keynote Address and submitted papers and posters in each Session.

The Keynote Addresses have been published in the first issue of Volume 28 of Australasian Plant Pathology, the official journal of the Australasian Plant Pathology Society (APPS). These addresses contain comprehensive reviews of topics that will be of interest to all pathologists working on soilborne diseases. Copies of the issue can be purchased from APPS for Aus$20, which includes the cost of postage by surface mail.

Titles of the reviews and authors’ names and an invoice for ordering the issue can be found on the APPS home page at <http://www.ozemail.com.au/~williap>.

For further information contact Dr Bob Dodman by e-mail at <dodmanb@tmba.design.net.au>.

South America

Electronic communications have put the ISPP Newsletter into contact with new correspondents in South America in recent weeks. One new contact is with Dr Sandra Garces working in plant protection at the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIAP), Quito, Ecuador; e-mail: <garces@fpapa.org.ec>.

The other is with Dr Beatriz A Perez working on cereal and oil crop health at the Instituto de Clima y Agua, CC 25, Castelar, Buenos Aires 1712, Argentina; e-mail: <bperez@inta.gov.ar>.

In each case, I express the wish to hear regional news for future ISPP Newsletters from Drs Garces and Perez and their colleagues.

Brian Deverall

Mike Wingfield

Recent Vice-President of ISPP, Professor Mike Wingfield, is now well installed along with many research students and associates in the Faculty of Biological Sciences and Agriculture at the University of Pretoria, having moved last year from Bloemfontein, South Africa.

He may be contacted at e-mail: <mike.wingfield@fabi.up.ac.za>.

APS Publications

For immediate release in March 1999 from the American Phytopathological Society (APS) were two new books:

Containment Facilities and Safeguards for Exotic Plant Pathogens and Pests, edited by Robert P Kahn and S B Mathur. It is a comprehensive volume about principles, concepts, data and guidelines relating to the design and function of a wide spectrum of containment facilities and safeguard procedures. Information from a number of nations includimg China, The Netherlands, Kenya, Portugal and the USA is presented. There are 220 pages. The ISBN is 0-89054-197-3 and the price is $69.

Plant-Microbe Interactions, Volume 4, edited by G Stacey and N Keen. It is the latest addition to a series aimed to synthesize and chronicle recent advances in this cutting-edge science, and it explores examples of micro-organisms and their sometimes unexpected effects on plants. Included are aspects of Rhizobium-plant relationships, a Xanthomonas avr/pth gene family, suppressors, oxidative bursts and signals activating resistance. There are 296 pages. The ISBN is 0-89054-228-7 and the price is $59.

It has also set up directed linkages between researchers, extension workers and the private sector through a Collaborative Network for Vegetable Research and Development in Southern Africa (CONVERDS) in order to ensure that breakthroughs are shared. Many people from southern Africa have been trained in the Africa Regional Program, and these people are passing on their training in their home regions.
