Venue for the 10th International Congress of Plant Pathology in 2013

The successful bid to host the International Congress of Plant Pathology 2013 (ICPP2013) was from the Chinese Society for Plant Pathology (CSPP), with the venue to be Beijing. ISPP Councillors have been told this by Dr Greg Johnson, Secretary General ISPP, ( secretary@isppweb.org ).

The proposed theme of ICPP 2013 in Beijing from 25 to 31 August 2013 is "Bio-security, Food Safety and Plant Pathology: The Role of Plant Pathology in a Globalized Economy".

The ISPP Executive Committee and member Societies offer their congratulations to CSPP, and their thanks to the Korean Society of Plant Pathology for an excellent alternative bid.

Procedure for election of ISPP's Executive Committee, 2008-2013

An election is to take place to select the President, Vice-President, Secretary-General and Treasurer to serve on ISPP's Executive Committee for the period 2008-2013.

The Rules of Procedure dictate that ISPP Councillors (most of whom represent national and regional plant pathology societies) are canvassed for nominees and are then balloted in an election.

The selection of nominees is conducted by a Nomination Committee, chosen to be geographically diverse and chaired by the Immediate Past-President. It has 10 members: Shinji Tsuyumu, Stuart Wale, Khaled Makkouk, Jan Leach, John Randles, S.C. Chatterjee, Edward French, Karin Jacobs, Chrys Akem and Peter Scott.

Each person proposed for nomination was invited to prepare a statement outlining how they would expect to contribute to meeting the objectives of ISPP if elected. From the names proposed to them, the Nomination Committee has selected two as candidates for election to each of the four Offices. They have been ratified by the Executive Committee.

Nominees for President: Lodovica GULLINO, Torino Shigenyuki MAYAMA, Kobe Nominees for Vice-President: Marie AYODELE, Ibadan Wafa KHOURY, FAO Nominees for Secretary-General: Jane CHARD, Edinburgh Greg JOHNSON, Canberra Nominees for Treasurer: Thomas EVANS, Newark PENG YouLiang, Beijing

An e-mail ballot is now to be held in which Councillors will select one of the two candidates for each Office. The candidates with a simple majority will be elected.

The second of ISPP's two Vice-Presidents is not part of the election procedure but will be nominated by the country hosting the 2013 International Congress of Plant Pathology.

According to the current information on the web-site, 15 April 2008 is when: Full registration closes; Exhibition Area's 2nd deadline occurs; Accommodation booking cut-off occurs; Technical Excursions registration closes; Partners' Programme registration closes

ISPP Subject Matter Committee Activities

The Editor of this ISPP Newsletter seeks information in particular about two ISPP Subject Matter Committees, one titled "Biological Control" and the other "Chemical Control". Would any reader who knows about members and/or activities of either of these two committees in the past two years, please contact me. News about other ISPP Subject Matter Committees would also be welcomed by me ( editor@isppweb.org  ) and by Professor Wenhua Tang, ISPP Vice-President, at ( wenhuatang@vip.sohu.com ). Attempts to contact Subject Matter Committees through their Chairs as listed on the ISPP web-page http://www.isppweb.org/about_subject.asp  have met with varied success and failure in recent months. It may be helpful to remind about the Objectives & Structure of ISPP as stated at ( http://www.isppweb.org/about_objectives.asp ), and in this context the Rules of Procedure and especially Article 12, which reads:

Committees of the Council shall be appointed for the term of office of the Council; they shall be considered for reappointment by the next Council.

A Committee shall inter alia: a) organize meetings on special subjects; b) propose for approval by the Council the establishment and membership of groups to study and report on special problems; c) encourage and arrange for international cooperation between plant pathologists; d) further the aims of the ISPP in other ways approved by the Council; and e) submit a summary report of Committee activities to the Secretary-General at the time of each Congress.

ISPP Advertisement of Vacant Positions

The ISPP Executive has decided that Vacant Positions and Student Opportunities in Plant Pathology and General Science can be advertised on the ISPP Web at a cost of $US200 each.

See: ( http://www.isppweb.org/about_vacancies.asp ).

In doing so, the ISPP reserves the right to refuse to carry advertisements deemed unsuitable. Job advertisements are accepted by ISPP in good faith. By advertising the positions, ISPP gives or implies no endorsement or recommendation.

For more information, please contact the ISPP Business Manager at ( businessmanager@ISPPWeb.org ).

Aspergillus and Plant Pathology

Dr Graham Atherton on behalf of the Fungal Research Trust ( www.fungalresearchtrust.org ) and the Aspergillus Trust ( www.aspergillustrust.org ) noticed mention of the Aspergillus Website ( www.aspergillus.org.uk ) in the July 2007 issue of the ISPP Newsletter. He regrets that one of the weaker areas in their website is coverage of plant pathology as they do not have expertise or an adviser in that area. His understanding is that Aspergillus is essentially a saprophyte and will attack dead or dying plant tissue (including stored food in that category) but wonders if he has an over-simplistic impression.

He would like to know if any ISPP members would be interested in providing expertise for the Aspergillus website - either informally or formally as an editor. Please contact him about this.

Biotic Plant Interactions

I have just returned from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, where an International Conference on Biotic Plant Interactions was held from 27-29 March 2008. There were excellent presentations on molecular events underlying pathogenesis and on signalling processes in plants affected by pathogens, pests and the rhizobium, and on related themes. A substantial review of the meeting will appear later in "New Phytologist", according to Peer Schenk, the Chair of the Organising Committee.

Fungus against an invasive weed

Pyrenophora semeniperda in soil may be of use in attacking Bromus tectorum, a destructive and invasive grass widespread in the USA and Canada, according to an item in the Newsletter of the Asia-Pacific Forest Invasive Species Network (APFISN) in its Volume 13 of November 2007. The grass, native to Europe and parts of Asia and Africa, has the potential to alter ecosystems. It can crowd out native grasses, shrubs and flowers and then provide explosively dry fuel for fires. It thus has serious impact on grazing and forage production for wildlife. The discovery of P. semeniperda, which kills the seeds of the weed, can change all of this. Professor Julie Beckstead and David L Boose of Gonzaga University, USA, will work with Brigham Young University and the US Forest Service's Mountain Research Station in Provo, Utah, USA, to gain a better understanding of this fungus and its effect on native plants.
