Egypt, 18-23 January 2004
The General Assembly and International Conference was
attended by more than 150 researchers coming from several countries. Since
the working documents, the resolutions adopted and the approved revisions

this short report will mostly focus on the contents of the Conference.
The Conference on Biological Sciences, Development and
Society has been organized by the International Union of Biological
Science with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) and the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and
Technology (ASRT), in collaboration with several International
Organizations.
The twelve plenary lectures concerned: Principles of
molecular evolution (W. Arber); Natural selection in genome evolution and
its general implications (G. Bernardi); Science and Awareness: the actual

Analysis of 4th National Conference of Plant Pathology,
Pakistan
The 4th National Conference of Plant Pathology, under the
auspices of Pakistan Phytopathological Society was organized and hosted by
University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi on 14th to 16th
October 2003.This conference was one of the series of the conferences
organized by Pakistan Phytopathological society.
The Pakistan Phytopathological society was established with aims and
objectives of promotion and dissemination of knowledge of all branches of
plant pathology and to encourage and promote interest in research. To
achieve these objectives society carry out different activities e.g.,
publication of the journal (Pakistan Journal of Phytopathology),
newsletters, laboratory manuals and organization of different
conferences to share current research with fellow scientists.
On 14th of October the conference started with the
recitation from the holy Quran followed by welcome address by Professor
Dr. Khalid Mehmood Khan S.I. vice chancellor UAAR in which he
highlighted the efforts and contributions made by university in the field
of agriculture. Then the president of the Society Dr. Sultan Mehmood
elucidated the introduction, role of the society and objectives of
conference . It was followed by the inaugural address by the chief guest
Mr.Muhammad Arshad Khan Lodhi minister of agriculture Punjab. He
appreciated the role of UAAR towards boosting barani agriculture and
appealed the plant scientists to make up with the future challenges. The
awards were also distributed to contributors of plant pathology field.
Afterward technical sessions started the sessions included some plenary
and popular lectures. All the major fields of plant pathology such as
mycology, bacteriology, nematology , virology, epidemiology, molecular
plant pathology and plant disease management were covered during the
conference. 15 minutes
Participants:
Almost 180 participants(130 from outside and
50 from university both inclusive of students) participated in the
conference, one from U.S.A., two from N.W. F. P. and none from Baluchistan.
Important burning pathological issues
discussed:
1. Cereal rust:
In the plenary lecture delivered by Dr Iftikhar Ahmed , the
participants were told that the genetic base for resistance to yellow rust
is very narrow in Pakistan indicating more chances of existing varieties
to succumb to the disease. It was further told that efforts are being made
to broaden the base and new genotypes with other genes are being
introduced in the National Breeding programme.
A paper "New Trends In Cereal Diseases, Potential Threat for
Efficient wheat Production". By Shamadad Khanzada NIA, Tandojam,
Sindh. was presented. He stressed for resistant germplasm i.e.,
Bakhtawar-93, monitoring pathogenicity and resistance stability. He also
emphasized for epidemiological studies and targetted breeding.
2. Tree decline problem
Lectures about mango quick decline/collar rot
and shishum decline were also delivered. It was discussed at length that
these problems are becoming severer and these are potential threats in
future. Work is in progress about diagnosis and management yet there is no
break through in their management due to complex nature of diseases due to
soil borne pathogens. Emphasis was given on integrated disease management
strategies.
3. Progress & Perspective Of Plant Nematology In Pakistan:
Dr. Maqbool discussed the history of plant nematology, and the roles of pioneer
and present scientists in the field. He said that increasing population is
demanding further intensification of agriculture which will result in more
attack of pathogens including nematodes. Discussing about management of
nematodes he said that in spite of different technologies, farmers will
have to rely on introduction of new crops and more resistant varieties,
better hygiene and better integration of available control measures
including the use of natural pesticides.
4. WTO and Plant Pathology:
Speakers were of the view that emphasis is to be placed on improved
conventional & recent bio-technological & genetic engineering
techniques to detection of various diseases of plant pathogens and their
races and their proper management. We have to equip our laboratories and
train our manpower to meet the future challenges of Sanitary and
Phytosanitary Measures.
Future Problems to be Addressed
Conference participants gave some recommendations which are as follows:
1. Plant Disease Health Clinics should be established in each
mono crop zone with proper manpower and facilities.
2. Plant Quarantine rules need drastic changes and
Plant Pathology Labs. at all entry points of the country. We have imported
many pests, diseases and weeds due to relaxed rules and insufficient
facilities.
3. The curricula of different Universities has been
revised through HEC (UGC) but need proper implementation to coup the
future needs of the country specially, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology
and Genetic Engineering .
4. WTO is going to be implemented/imposed on us by
Jan. 2005, we have to equip our laboratories and train our manpower to
meet the future challenges of Sanitory and Phytosanitory Measures.
5. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Diseases Management
(IDM) should be given maximum attention for safe food and friendly
environmental.
6. Recently introduced Internship Programme in University of
Agriculture, Faisalabad and University Of Arid
Agriculture,Rawalpindi should be strengthened by providing money and
mobility to the students and should be expanded to other Universities,
Colleges of Agriculture.

Draft Banana disease names lists now on website
The ISPP-Committee for Common Names of Plant Diseases (ISPP-CCN)
announces that lists of recommended names of banana diseases and their
pathogens have been placed on the Internet at http://www.isppweb.org/names_common.asp
.
These lists have been prepared by a subcommittee of the ISPP-CCN
comprising David Jones (Chair), Chris Hayward and John Thomas. One list is
accessed by disease name, and a second by pathogen name.
You are invited to comment on names in the draft Banana disease names
lists. Comments and criticisms can be sent to the Chair of the ISPP-CCN,
David Teakle at d.teakle@uq.edu.au ,
or to members of the ISPP-CCN listed on the above website.
The ISPP-CCN through its lists of seeks to encourage the use of
internationally standardized disease names. Where more than one name is
used for a disease, the best name should be adopted. The best
name generally is consistent with the 8 Principles which characterize
a good name. For instance, a good name usually contains a symptom
descriptor of the disease. A brief discussion of the aims of the
ISPP-CCN, a list of its Principles (guidelines) for creating names of
new diseases, and its current Working Rules can also be found on the
above website.
New publications of interest to plant pathologists:
INTRODUCTION TO PLANT PATHOLOGY
By Richard Strange
Introduction to Plant Pathology provides a comprehensive
coverage of plant disease for plant science, plant pathology, biology,
forestry and agriculture students.
In the first chapter the author introduces the eleven types of organism
that cause disease, ranging from higher plants to viroids, and describes
examples of cash and staple crop diseases that have caused human
catastrophes.
Other chapters cover serological and molecular techniques for the
diagnosis of plant pathogens, epidemiology, methods for estimating disease
severity and its effect on crop yields and techniques for limiting
inoculum, including biological control.
Later chapters are concerned with colonisation of the plant and symptom
development and the underlying biochemical and genetic factors that
control these events.
Unique in several ways, this title includes:
- Modern diagnostic techniques
- Epidemiology and the measurement of disease severity
- The biochemistry and molecular biology of plant disease
- Control through cultural, biological, genetic and molecular
techniques
A wealth of examples and applications including 16 pages of full colour
photographs.
