The pathotype is referred to Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vitians, but the fact that this single strain differs uniquely from the other strains from lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) suggests that it may be mis-labelled, or may have been inappropriately selected as the pathotype strain. All other strains are referred to X. hortorum, but evidence is lacking that these represent a distinct pathovar.
