The Italian Association for Plant Protection (AIPP) was established in 1992 from the fusion of the formerly Italian Society of Crop Protection, founded in 1951 by R. Ciferri of the University of Pavia and E. Baldacci of the University of Milan, and the Italian Phytopathological Association, founded in 1973 by A. Ciccarone of the University of Bari and G. Goidanich of the University of Bologna. AIPP is a non-profit society aimed at promoting research, teaching and permanent formation in the field of crop protection, and improving knowledge and progress concerning tools and methodologies for protection of plants and their products from biotic and abiotic adverse factors, environmental pollutants and inappropriate production techniques. AIPP publishes the national journal Notiziario per le Malattie delle Piante.
In 2004, the Society founded an award entitled to "G. Domenichini". In 2008, the Society founded an award for the participation of young researchers to the International Congress of Plant pathology to be held in Turin (Italy).

Annual meeting of the Italian Society of Plant Pathology (SIPaV, Societˆ Italiana di Patologia vegetale). Biannual and satellite meetings on crop protection and related topics organized by Giornate Fitopatologiche (Phytopathological Days). Annual Forum on crop protection organized by AGRINNOVA (University of Turin).
Key issues include: i) redefining university education in plant pathology; ii) evolution of European regulatory laws concerning phytosanitary and genetic quality of plant propagation materials; iii) evolution of European regulatory laws concerning the use of pesticides with increasing attention to the environment and the consumer; iv) evolution of European regulatory laws concerning food safety and contamination of agricultural produces by mycotoxins; v) strong concern of European institutions towards transgenic plants; vi) negative influence of big marketing organizations on the application of integrated pest management in agricultural practice; vii) introduction and spreading of quarantine pathogens; viii) inability of universities and other research groups to plane and sustain long-term research.
Funding opportunities
Funding opportunities for basic and applied R & D is not fully satisfactory and strongly dependent on the nature of each particular topic. Founds come especially from the European Union, the Italian Ministries of Research and University, and of Agricultural and Forestry Politics, and from some local (regional) governments. . Italian researchers collaborate with research teams in other European and extra-European countries through different programs and funding sources.
 
Plant pathology in the Region Served by the Society 2003-2008

Research in plant pathology is carried out by universities, research centres of the Council for Research and Experimentation in Agriculture (CRA, Consiglio per la Ricerca e la Sperimentazione in Agricoltura) of the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Politics, Institutes of the National Research Council (CNR, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche), few private research institutes. Some experimentation on applied topics is also carried out or promoted by the national and regional phytosanitary services.
Researches topics include most of the aspects of plant pathology, such as: epidemiology of plant diseases, characterization of plant pathogens, variation in populations of plant pathogens, plant-pathogen interactions, genetic and induced resistance of plants to diseases, biological, serological and molecular diagnosis, biological and integrated crop protection from diseases, ecology and mode of action of microbial antagonists, control of post-harvest diseases, crop protection in organic agriculture, disease forecasting, genetic transformation of plants, contamination of food and feed by micotoxins, sanitary selection, plant sanitation.
